Leaf development in the tropical leguminous tree Copaifera in relation to microlepidopteran herbivory
TLDR
In all species the phenolic content, astringency, nitrogen and water content decreased whereas the leaf specific weight and toughness increased as the leaf attained maturity, although the pattern of sesquiterpene variation during leaf development, however, differed among the species.About:

Herbivory and plant defenses in tropical forests
P. D. Coley and,J. A. Barone +1 more
TL;DR: Folivorous mammals do less damage than insects or pathogens but have evolved to cope with the high levels of plant defenses and, along with insect herbivores, may contribute to the maintenance of tree diversity.

Higher plant terpenoids:a phytocentric overview of their ecological roles
TL;DR: Characteristics of higher plant terpenoids that result in mediation of numerous kinds of ecological interactions are discussed as a framework for this Symposium on Chemical Ecology of Terpenoids, and the role of terpenoid mixtures is emphasized.

Plant biomechanics in an ecological context
Jennifer Read,Alexia Stokes +1 more
TL;DR: Plants can show considerable phenotypic plasticity in mechanical traits, allowing adjustment to changing environments across a range of spatial and temporal scales, but it is not always clear whether a mechanical property is adaptive or a consequence of the physiology associated with stress.

Anti-Herbivore Defenses of Young Tropical Leaves: Physiological Constraints and Ecological Trade-offs
TL;DR: Many leaf developmental traits may be the result of selection by herbivores and pathogens, and most of the understanding of the costs and benefits of defenses and of the interplay between defenses and herbivore is based on research on mature leaves.

Interactions Among Three Trophic Levels: Influence of Plants on Interactions Between Insect Herbivores and Natural Enemies
TL;DR: It is argued that theory on insect-plant interactions cannot progress realistically without consideration of the third trophic level, and plants have many effects, direct and indirect, positive and negative, not only on herbivore but also on the enemies of herbivores.

Herbivory and defensive characteristics of tree species in a lowland tropical forest
TL;DR: Interspecific patterns of defense mechanisms are discussed in terms of current theories of plant apparency, and an alternative model for the evolution of plant defenses is presented.

Protein precipitation method for the quantitative determination of tannins
Ann E. Hagerman,Larry G. Butler +1 more
TL;DR: The tannin content of crude plant exts. was detd. by adding the sample to a std. soln. as discussed by the authors, and measuring the absorbance at 510 nm after adding FeCl3.

A comparative study of the phytochemistry of two African Rain Forests
TL;DR: A comparative analysis of aspects of the secondary chemistry of plants from the Kibale Forest, Uganda, and the Douala-Edea Forest Reserve, Cameroon has shown mean concentrations of tannins and other phenolics to be significantly greater in both young and mature foliage from Douala, Edea than in comparable taxa from Kibales.
