Journal ArticleDOI

The reinforcing properties of conspicuous stimuli in the imprinting situation

TL;DR: The results suggest that the factors affecting the reinforcing properties of a conspicuous visual stimulus closely correspond with those affecting the elicitation of social behaviour by such a stimulus and suggest that imprinting can proceed hand-in-hand with operant conditioning and narrows down the range of visual stimuli with reinforcing properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interactive and vicarious acquisition of auditory preferences in Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) chicks.

TL;DR: Results indicate that both direct and indirect exposure to stimulus contingency can enhance the acquisition of auditory preferences in precocial avian hatchlings, and thus likely play a more active role in directing their own perceptual and behavioral development than has typically been thought.
Journal ArticleDOI

Response-contingent prenatal experience of maternal calls in the Peking duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

TL;DR: Results show that response rate was significantly increased to the mallard maternal call, but not to the chiken maternalcall, as a function of the contingency.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reinforcement and activation of domestic chicks as a function of the intensity of light onset

TL;DR: In this article, seven intensities of light onset treatment conditions with appropriate yoked controls were used to investigate the functional relationship between intensity and the reinforcing and activity properties of the sensory stimulus of chicks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Arousal and reinforcing properties of light onset as a function of duration and of visual complexity for chicks.

TL;DR: The interaction between arousal and sensory reinforcement upon operant behavior of 240 chicks was investigated as a function of visual complexity and duration of light onset and confirmed the findings that light onset was reinforcing for chicks and that visual complexity magnified its reinforcing potential.

Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of sensory deprivation level, visual complexity, and age upon light contingent responses during rearing.

TL;DR: A decrease and subsequent increase in the age function suggests the operation of a “sensitive” period in rat development, whose onset is driven by degree of sensory input and differs with sex.
