Long-Term Outcome and Health-Related Quality of Life of Elderly Patients After Meningioma Surgery.

TLDR
The findings suggest that Karnofsky performance scale and American Society of Anesthesiologists scores have a strong effect on long-term HRQOL, especially for older patients after meningioma resection, which should be a substantial consideration in the preoperative decision-making process.

Elderly Patients with Intracranial Meningioma: Surgical Considerations in 228 Patients with a Comprehensive Analysis of the Literature

TL;DR: Even though elderly patients operated for intracranial meningioma had higher morbidity and mortality rates compared to younger patients, surgery is still much more beneficial than wait-and-see strategy in elderly patients.

Geographic and socioeconomic considerations for glioblastoma treatment in the elderly at a national level: a US perspective

TL;DR: There exists geographic disparity in the treatment outcomes of elderly GBM patients in the United States alone, and public health initiatives targeting these aspects may prove beneficial conceptually to optimize and homogenize clinical outcomes.

Functional outcome and quality of life after meningioma surgery: a systematic review.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors systematically reviewed the literature on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) and functional disability (FD) of patients after surgery for intracranial meningiomas.

Intracranial Meningioma in Elderly Patients. Retrospective Multicentric Risk and Surgical Factors Study of Morbidity and Mortality

TL;DR: There is only an increased risk of reduced performance status with mortality related to the comorbidity of the patient, primarily cardiovascular disease, and an intrinsic frailty of the aged population after meningioma surgery.

Assessment of Older People: Self-Maintaining and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

M. P. Lawton, +1 more
- 21 Sep 1969 -
TL;DR: Two scales first standardized on their own population are presented, one of which taps a level of functioning heretofore inadequately represented in attempts to assess everyday functional competence, and the other taps a schema of competence into which these behaviors fit.

CBTRUS statistical report: primary brain and central nervous system tumors diagnosed in the United States in 2007-2011.

TL;DR: The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Cancer Institute, is the largest population-based registry focused exclusively on primary brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors in the US.

Epidemiology and etiology of meningioma.

TL;DR: Current knowledge about meningioma epidemiology and etiology is highlighted, an etiologic role for hormones (both endogenous and exogenous) has been hypothesized and future research directions are suggested.

Postoperative irradiation for subtotally resected meningiomas: A retrospective analysis of 140 patients treated from 1967 to 1990

TL;DR: Evaluated patients treated at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1967 to 1990 found subtotal resection combined with precise treatment planning techniques and adjuvant radiation therapy can achieve results comparable to those of total resection.

Radiation therapy in the treatment of partially resected meningiomas.

TL;DR: Significant evidence is provided that radiation therapy is beneficial in the treatment of partially resected meningiomas and the median time to recurrence was significantly longer in the irradiated group than in the nonirradiated group.
