A method for selecting a queue for service across a shared link. The method includes classifying each queue from a group of queues within a plurality of ingresses into one tier of a number 'N' of tiers. The number 'N' is greater than or equal to 2. Information about allocated bandwidth is used to classify at least some of the queues into the tiers. Each tier is assigned a different priority. The method also includes matching queues to available egresses by matching queues classified within tiers with higher priorities before matching queues classified within tiers with lower priorities.read more

Method for connection acceptance control and rapid determination of optimal multi-media content delivery over networks
TL;DR: In this paper, a method of bandwidth allocation for delivery of stored digital content from at least one server device to at most one client device by way of a network is disclosed, where a control variable which represents a target flow rate from the server devices to each client device is prescribed.

Priority based bandwidth allocation within real-time and non-real-time traffic streams
Brahmanand Kumar Gorti,Marco C. Heddes,Clark Debs Jeffries,Andreas Kind,Michael Steven Siegel +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for transmitting packets in a packet switching network is presented. Packets received by a packet processor may be prioritized based on the urgency to process them.

Method for scaling address lookups using synthetic addresses
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present methods for unifying various types of end-point identifiers, such as IPv4 (e.g., Internet protocol version 4 represented by a VRF and an IPv4 address), IPv6 (e] e.g. IPv6 and Layer-2 represented by bridge domain (BD) and a media access control (MAC) address), by mapping endpoint identifiers to a uniform space and allowing different forms of lookups to be uniformly handled.

Distributed congestion avoidance in a network switching system
TL;DR: In this paper, the total offered traffic load for a shared resource within a network switching system may include a sum of offered traffic loads from one or more active virtual output queues (VOQs).

Method for connection acceptance control and optimal multi-media content delivery over networks
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method for bandwidth allocation for multimedia data delivery from at least one server to one or more clients over a network, which includes the steps of determining a maximum flow rate and a minimum flow rate for each client, determining a flow rate range for each clients as given by the difference between the maximum flow rates and the minimum flow rates, sorting the one or multiple clients according to the flow rate ranges, initializing a current flow rate as the minimum Flow rate and summing the flow rates into total server flow rate, establishing remaining server bandwidth; and

Queueing in high-performance packet switching
M.G. Hluchyj,Mark J. Karol +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors study the performance of four different approaches for providing the queuing necessary to smooth fluctuations in packet arrivals to a high-performance packet switch, including input queuing, smoothing, output queuing and completely shared buffering.

High capacity reservation multiple access network with multiple shared unidirectional paths
TL;DR: In this paper, a method and system for enabling point-to-point and multicast communication in a network using three types of communication channels, namely, one or more upstream payload channels, oneor more upstream control channels and one/more downstream channels, is described.

Dynamic queue length thresholds for shared-memory packet switches
TL;DR: This work proposes a novel scheme called dynamic threshold (DT) that combines the simplicity of ST and the adaptivity of PO, and uses computer simulation to compare the loss performance of DT, ST, and PO.

Selectable prioritization for data communication switch
TL;DR: In this paper, a data communication switch receives packets having first priorities, generates second priorities as a function of the first priorities and prioritizes selected ones of the plurality of packets of the 802.1Q-complaint tagged packets based on a tag priority.
