TLDR
In this article, the authors used backscattered electron (BSE) imaging to investigate the micro and meso-scale structure of mortar with varying aggregate content and found that larger pores are present not only within the ITZ but also within areas far from aggregates.

The ITZ microstructure, thickness and porosity in blended cementitious composite: Effects of curing age, water to binder ratio and aggregate content

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of casting factors such as curing age, water to binder (w/b) ratio and aggregate content are discussed, and two new formulas are proposed to fit the ITZ thickness and porosity.

Diffusivity of saturated ordinary Portland cement-based materials: A critical review of experimental and analytical modelling approaches

TL;DR: A comprehensive overview of existing experimental and modelling approaches to determine effective diffusion coefficients of water saturated ordinary Portland cement-based materials can be found in this article, where a dataset for diffusivity obtained from different experimental techniques have been presented for cement paste, mortar and concrete.

Influence of cracks on chloride diffusivity in concrete: A five-phase mesoscale model approach

TL;DR: In this paper, a mesoscale numerical approach to investigate the chloride diffusivity in cracked concrete is presented, where the crack is located in the middle of the damaged zone (DZ), and there is a relationship of the chloride diffusion coefficients between the DZ and the crack.

Characterization of interfacial transition zone in concrete prepared with carbonated modeled recycled concrete aggregates

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of carbonation treatment of modeled RCA on the interface between the carbonated RCA and new cement mortar/paste using frictional (shear) and tensile bond tests, microhardness, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Effect of paste volume on fresh and hardened properties of concrete

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of CPV on various performance attributes of concrete at fresh and hardened states was evaluated by varying the CPV from 26% to 32% at two different W/C ratios.

The Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) Between Cement Paste and Aggregate in Concrete

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the so called interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in concrete as the region of the cement paste around the aggregate particles, which is perturbed by the presence of the aggregate, and show that the higher porosity present initially is significantly diminished by the migration of ions during hydration.

Water-entrained cement-based materials

TL;DR: In this article, a method for reducing autogenous shrinkage in a material based on a hydraulic mineral binder, e.g. cement, by preparing a mixture comprising the binder and water and a water-entraining agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogels and microencapsulated water, casting the mixture in a desired configuration, and allowing the mixture to cure.

Interfacial Transition Zone in Concrete

TL;DR: In this article, the formation mechanisms and the microstructure of the ITZ are described, and the local properties of the interfacial zone are reviewed: the mechanical and the transport characteristics of theITZ are discussed in relation to the porosity and connectivity of pores.
