Mobile phones as a challenge for m-learning: examples for mobile interactive learning objects (MILOs)

TLDR
This paper presents a practical approach to m-learning and calls it "mobile interactive learning objects" (MILOs) which are used within a mobile learning engine (MLE) that runs on mobile phones.
Abstract
The widespread use of mobile phones (in Europe often called "handles") enables a long awaited dream: learning at any place, at any time. This "not being tied to particular locations" is for example especially interesting in the area of medicine i.e. for vocational training of medical staff and students. As the amount of medical information continues to grow, timely access to information is critical to medical personnel. However, such applications can not be the 1:1 transformation of standard computerized learning material; special design issues must be considered. In this paper we present a practical approach to m-learning and call it "mobile interactive learning objects" (MILOs) which are used within a mobile learning engine (MLE) that runs on mobile phones. MILOs can offer manifold possibilities for new kinds of communication and explorative learning.

Mobile Medical Education (MoMEd) - how mobile information resources contribute to learning for undergraduate clinical students - a mixed methods study

TL;DR: A model for mobile learning in the clinical setting is developed that shows how different theories contribute to its use taking into account positive and negative contextual factors.

Personalized Intelligent M-learning System for Supporting Effective English Learning

TL;DR: This study adopts the advantages of the mobile learning to present a personalized intelligent m-learning system (PIMS) which can appropriately recommend english news articles to learners based on the learners' reading abilities evaluated by the proposed fuzzy item response theory (FIRT) for non-native english speakers.

Effects of short-term memory and content representation type on mobile language learning

TL;DR: The findings show that providing learning content with pictorial annotation in a mobile language learning environment can help learners with lower verbal and higher visual ability, and suggest that providing just the basic learning materials is more helpful to learners with low verbal and visual abilities.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

Situated Cognition and the Culture of Learning

TL;DR: Collins, Brown, and Newman as mentioned in this paper argue that knowledge is situated, being in part a product of the activity, context, and culture in which it is developed and used, and propose cognitive apprenticeship as an alternative to conventional practices.
