The authors present an algorithm for controlling blood glucose in the Type I diabetic patient using model predictive control (MPG) of a closed-loop insulin infusion pump, designed from a detailed 19th order model of the human glucose-insulin system.Abstract:
The authors present an algorithm for controlling blood glucose in the Type I diabetic patient using model predictive control (MPG) of a closed-loop insulin infusion pump The controller is designed from a detailed 19th order model of the human glucose-insulin system Input constraints, based on insulin pump and physiological requirements, are enforced The controller is challenged with a hyperglycemic diabetic patient (setpoint tracking), and a controlled diabetic ingesting a meal (unmeasured disturbance rejection) To improve both robustness and performance, a new controller using MPC with state estimation is synthesized Compared to the non-state estimating controller, the new controller results in a 40% improvement in overshoot, to a maximum hypoglycemic deviation of 79 mg/dl, and a 23% decrease in settling time These results demonstrate the potential use for this algorithm in a closed-loop insulin infusion pumpread more

A model-based algorithm for blood glucose control in Type I diabetic patients
TL;DR: A model-based-predictive control algorithm is developed to maintain normoglycemia in the Type I diabetic patient using a closed-loop insulin infusion pump and outperforms an internal model controller from literature under noise-free conditions.

System and method for initiating and maintaining continuous, long-term control of a concentration of a substance in a patient using a feedback or model-based controller coupled to a single-needle or multi-needle intradermal (ID) delivery device
TL;DR: A closed loop therapy system for controlling a concentration of a substance, such as blood glucose concentration, in the body of a user is described in this paper, which employs a sensor system that measures a glucose level, a controller that uses the measured glucose levels to generate an output that can be used to automatically or manually control an intradermal insulin infusion system to set a constant or time-varying profile of target blood glucose concentrations in a user.

TL;DR: A three-layer modular architecture for the control of diabetes, consisting in a sensor/pump interface module (IM), a continuous safety module (CSM), and a real-time control module (RTCM) is introduced, which separates the functions of insulin recommendation (postmeal insulin for mitigating hyperglycemia) and safety (prevention of hypoglycemia).
