What factors shape sexual size dimorphism in ungulates

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that allometry is unimportant for shaping sexual size dimorphism in ungulates, and that degree of polygyny alone can almost entirely account for the phenomenon that sexual sizeDimorphism increases with increasing body size in unGulates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolutionary history of the genus Capra (Mammalia, Artiodactyla): discordance between mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome phylogenies.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a plausible scenario involves mtDNA introgression between ancestral taxa before the relatively recent colonization of Western Europe, the Caucasus Mountains, and East Africa by Capra populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fluctuating trade-offs favour precocial maturity in male Soay sheep.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that early reproduction does indeed carry a survival cost, and it is found that young males also achieve unexpectedly high reproductive success and that precocial mating is favoured due to the fluctuating demographic structure of the population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hybrid origin of the Pliocene ancestor of wild goats.

TL;DR: This study examines DNA sequences of four mitochondrial and four nuclear genes selected for resolving phylogenetic relationships between goats, sheep, and their allies to suggest that the common ancestor of wild goats arose from interspecific hybridization, and that the mitochondrial genome of a species better adapted to life at high altitudes was transferred via this route into thecommon ancestor of Capra.

Conflicts between traditional pastoralism and conservation of Himalayan ibex (Capra sibirica) in the Trans‐Himalayan mountains

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of the spatial distribution of livestock on habitat and diet choice of Himalayan ibex by examining their co-occurrence patterns in cells overlaid on the pastures.
