TLDR
Direct physical evidence confirming the Campbell model for the structure of prophage λ was obtained by observing the structure in the electron microscope of a heteroduplex between one strand of an episome, F450(λ ++ ), bearing a λ prophages and the complementary strand of λ b 5 DNA.

Electron microscope heteroduplex studies of sequence relations among plasmids of Escherichia coli: I. Structure of F-prime factors

TL;DR: The sequence relations between some bacterial F-prime factors in Escherichia coli have been determined by observing the pattern of duplex and single-stranded regions in heteroduplexes consisting of one strand from one episome and the complementary strand from another.

Integration and Excision of Bacteriophage λ

TL;DR: Coliphage λ is a temperate virus and a fraction of λ infected bacterial cells survive, and some of the survivors become lysogens, bacteria that have stably acquired two new properties, i.e., immunity to infection by a further challenge of virus and the capacity to produce infective virus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Electron microscope heteroduplex studies of sequence relations among plasmids of Escherichia coli: structure of F100, F152, and F8 and mapping of the Escherichia coli chromosomal region fep-supE-gal-attlambda-uvrB.

TL;DR: A genetic method was developed to reconstruct the original F-prime factors from deletion variants and confirmed the derivation of the F- prime factors F100 and F152, from the same Hfr, and determined the normal E. coli chromosomal sequence in the region between fep and uvrB.
Journal ArticleDOI

The sequence organization of the integrated F plasmid in two Hfr strains of Escherichia coli.

TL;DR: The sequence organization of the integrated fertility factor F in the Hfr strains P4X and P804 of Escherichia coli K12 has been determined by examination of heteroduplex structures formed from the bacterial DNA of each Hfr with F Δ and with either of the F-primes F2 or F42-1.

Studies on Escherichia coli Sex Factors: Evidence That Covalent Circles Exist Within Cells and the General Problem of Isolation of Covalent Circles

TL;DR: It is argued that under optimal conditions covalent circles are neither created nor lost during the isolation procedure, and the causes of the culture-to-culture variation in recovery of covalents circular deoxyribonucleic acid were investigated.
