On fuzzy algorithms

Abstract
Unlike most papers in Information and Control, our note contains no theorems and no proofs. Essentially, its purpose is to introduce a basic concept which, though fuzzy rather than precise in nature, may eventually prove to be of use in a wide variety of problems relating to information processing, control, pattern recognition, system identification, artificial intelligence and, more generally, decision processes involving incomplete or uncertain data. The concept in question will be called a fuzzy algorithm because it may be viewed as a generalization, through the process of fuzzification, of the conventional (nonfuzzy) conception of an algorithm. More specifically, unlike a nonfuzzy deterministic or nondeterministic algorithm (Floyd, 1967), a fuzzy algorithm may contain fuzzy statements, that is, statements containing names of fuzzy sets (Zadeh, 1965), by which we mean classes in which there may be grades of membership intermediate between full membership and nonmembership. To illustrate, fuzzy algorithms may contain fuzzy instructions such as:

Handling uncertainties in the seismic analysis using fuzzy theory

Luca Sgambi
TL;DR: The attention is focused on the definition of the seismic input (artificial accelerograms) and the consequent dynamical analyses which are developed in presence of uncertainties and an analysis is developed based on the fuzzy theory.

Optimal Hydraulic Structures Profiles Under Uncertain Seepage Head

TL;DR: In this paper, an optimization problem is formulated to obtain the optimum structural dimensions that minimize the cost as well as satisfy the exit gradient criteria, which is considered the most appropriate criterion to ensure safety against piping on permeable foundations.

Evolution and decay of peneplains in the northern Lhasa terrane, Tibetan Plateau

TL;DR: In this article, the evolution and decay of peneplains, which are distinctive geomorphological structures in the southern area of the Tibetan Plateau, was investigated. And the results indicated an ongoing period of stability for the geomorphic feature of the peneplain.

A New Nonlinear Specification of Structural Breaks for Money Demand in Iran

TL;DR: In this article, a new transition function is introduced in a structural time series regression equation model in order to transform the binary dummy variables into a fuzzy set, which is used to quantify qualitative or categorical quantitative events such as politic and economic structural breaks, regions, age groups and etc.

Nondeterministic Algorithms

TL;DR: Algorithms to solve combinatorial search problems by using multiple-valued functions are illustrated with algorithms to find all solutions to the eight queens problem on the chessboard, and to finding all simple cycles in a network.
