TLDR
In this paper, an intercomparison of various cluster techniques was carried out on a well-studied dataset (7-day precipitation data from 1949 to 1987 in central and eastern North America).
Abstract
Cluster analysis (CA) has been applied to geophysical research for over two decades although its popularity has increased dramatically over the past few years. To date, systematic methodological reviews have not appeared in geophysical literature. In this paper, after a review of a large number of applications on cluster analysis, an intercomparison of various cluster techniques was carried out on a well-studied dataset (7-day precipitation data from 1949 to 1987 in central and eastern North America). The cluster methods tested were single linkage, complete linkage, average linkage between groups, average linkage within a new group, Ward's method, k means, the nucleated agglomerative method, and the rotated principal component analysis. Three different dissimilarity measures (Euclidean distance, inverse correlation, and theta angle) and three initial partition methods were also tested on the hierarchical and nonhierarchical methods, respectively. Twenty-two of the 23 cluster algorithms yielded na...

Absorptive capacity configurations in supply chains: gearing for partner-enabled market knowledge creation

TL;DR: This study uncovers and examines the variety of supply chain partnership configurations that exist based on differences in capability platforms, reflecting varying processes and information systems, and uses the absorptive capacity lens to build a conceptual framework that links these configurations with partner-enabled market knowledge creation.

Redefining the climate zones of turkey using cluster analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the mathematical methodology of cluster analysis was used to define seven different climate zones of Turkey, as in conventional climate zones, but with considerable differences at the boundaries, and the stability of the clusters was also tested.

Confidence limits on phylogenies: an approach using the bootstrap.

TL;DR: The recently‐developed statistical method known as the “bootstrap” can be used to place confidence intervals on phylogenies and shows significant evidence for a group if it is defined by three or more characters.

Hierarchical Grouping to Optimize an Objective Function

TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for forming hierarchical groups of mutually exclusive subsets, each of which has members that are maximally similar with respect to specified characteristics, is suggested for use in large-scale (n > 100) studies when a precise optimal solution for a specified number of groups is not practical.
