TLDR
In this paper, it was shown that many of the p -branes of type II string theory and d = 11 supergravity can have boundaries on other p-branes, and the rules for when this can and cannot occur are derived from charge conservation.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anti-de Sitter Space, Thermal Phase Transition, And Confinement in Gauge Theories

TL;DR: The correspondence between supergravity and string theory on AdS space and boundary conformal eld theory relates the thermodynamics of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions to the thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild black holes in Anti-de Sitter space as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wilson loops in large N field theories

TL;DR: In this paper, the expectation values of an operator similar to the Wilson loop in the large $N$ limit of field theories were calculated for supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.
Journal ArticleDOI

Type iib superstrings, bps monopoles, and three-dimensional gauge dynamics

TL;DR: In this article, the Coulomb branch of certain three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and the moduli spaces of magnetic monopoles are explained via string theory, and new phase transitions in three dimensions as well as new infrared fixed points and even new coupling constants are predicted from the string theory construction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Solutions of four-dimensional field theories via m-theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the Coulomb branch of a large family of four-dimensional N = 2 field theories with zero or negative beta function is studied, and explicit solutions for Coulomb branches are given.

Quantum field theory and the Jones polynomial

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that 2+1 dimensional quantum Yang-Mills theory with an action consisting purely of the Chern-Simons term is exactly soluble and gave a natural framework for understanding the Jones polynomial of knot theory in three dimensional terms.
Journal ArticleDOI

String theory dynamics in various dimensions

TL;DR: The strong coupling dynamics of string theories in dimension d ⩾ 4 are studied in this paper, where it is argued that eleven-dimensional supergravity arises as a low energy limit of the ten-dimensional Type IIA superstring.
Journal ArticleDOI

Black strings and p-branes

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that low-energy string theory admits a variety of solutions with the structure of an extended object surrounded by an event horizon, whose extremal member is a previously discovered non-singular supersymmetric fivebrane.
Journal ArticleDOI

New Connections Between String Theories

TL;DR: In this article, the R→0 limit of toroidal compactification in various string theories is considered and connections between seemingly different string theories: IIA and IIB, open and closed, oriented and unoriented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Supermembranes and Eleven-Dimensional Supergravity

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors constructed an action for a supermembrane propagating in d = 1 supergravity background, and showed that the action is invariant under Siegel-type tranformations recently generalized by Hughes, Li and Polchinski.
