TLDR
This study attempted to use paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde modified after Karnovsky (1965) for routine light and electron microscopic study of phytoflagellates to avoid toxicity problems and provide samples that would be useful for light microscopy, SEM, and TEM.

Importance of Picoplankton in Lake Superior

TL;DR: In Lake Superior, a significant portion of this picoplankton (<1 μm) production may be consumed by heterotrophic protozoans in a "microbial loop."

Quantitative differences between benthic algal communities along a depth gradient in lake michigan1,2

TL;DR: Dominance of benthic species, high diversity and low abundance in shallow communities probably resulted from substantial substrate disturbance by wave action in this productive zone, and dominance of living planktonic taxa, low diversity and high abundance delineated deep communities where planktonics algae accumulated and low light levels reduced growth of benthal species.

Production of planktonic bacteria in Lake Michigan

TL;DR: Bacterial production rates were estimated for the surface waters of a station 100m deep in southeastern Lake Michigan during 1984 as discussed by the authors, based on incorporation of C3Hmethyllthymidine and from empirical conversion factors determined from dilution experiments performed throughout the study.

Rejuvenation of melosira granulata (bacillariophyceae) resting cells from the anoxic sediments of douglas lake, michigan. i. light migroscopy and 14c uptake 1

TL;DR: It was observed that the lag period for rejuvenation increased with resting cell age (depth of burial in sediments), and in the 14C uptake studies, label was initially observed in condensed state cells, but gradually progressed to the more differentiated forms.

General response of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium to desiccation: A new role for the virulence factors sopD and sseD in survival.

TL;DR: Findings suggested that sopD and sseD are required for Salmonella’s survival during desiccation, and these genes were involved in metabolic pathways, transporter regulation, DNA replication/repair, transcription and translation, and, more importantly, virulence genes.

Development of mucilaginous surfaces in euglenoids. ii. flagellated, creeping and palmelloid cells of euglena1

TL;DR: Critical‐point dried cells from clonal cultures of Euglena gracilis Klebs, E. tripteris and E. myxocylindracea elongated were examined by scanning electron microscopy, finding that as palmellae mature, the mucilage surface becomes less porous and the individuality of most mucilage strands is lost.
