Performance Analysis of a Dual-Hop Wireless-Power Line Mixed Cooperative System

Abstract: Wireless communications and power line communications (PLC) are essential components for smart grid communications. This paper analyses the performance of a dual-hop wireless-power line mixed communication setup employing a decode-and-forward relay in terms of analytical average bit error rate (BER), outage probability, and average channel capacity. The Nakagami- $m$ distribution captures the wireless channel fading; whereas the PLC channel gain is characterized by the Log-normal distribution. The additive PLC channel noise is assumed to be Bernoulli-Gaussian distributed. Approximate closed-form expression of the average BER and exact closed-form expression of the outage probability are derived for the considered system. Further, we obtain an approximate closed-form expression of the capacity of the wireless-power line mixed system in terms of the Meijer-G function. It is observed that the system performance deteriorates as the impulsive noise index and the arrival probability of the impulsive component of the PLC additive noise increase.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the physical layer secrecy performance of a hybrid satellite and free-space optical (FSO) cooperative system. The satellite links are assumed to follow the shadowed-Rician fading distribution, and the channel of the terrestrial link between the relay and destination is assumed to experience the gamma-gamma fading. For the FSO communications, the effects of different types of detection techniques (i.e., heterodyne detection and intensity modulation with direct detection) as well as the pointing error are considered. We derive exact analytical expressions for the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability (SOP) for both cases of amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying. The asymptotic analysis for the SOP is also conducted to provide more insights on the impact of FSO and satellite channels on secrecy performance. It is found that with the AF with fixed gain scheme, the secrecy diversity order of the investigated system is only dependent on the channel characteristics of the FSO link and the FSO detection type, whereas the secrecy diversity is zero when the relay node employs DF or AF with variable-gain schemes.

Abstract: With the ongoing trends in the energy sector such as vehicular electrification and renewable energy, smart grid is clearly playing a more and more important role in the electric power system industry. One essential feature of the smart grid is the information flow over the high-speed, reliable and secure data communication network in order to manage the complex power systems effectively and intelligently. Smart grids utilize bidirectional communication to function where traditional power grids mainly only use one-way communication. The communication requirements and suitable technique differ depending on the specific environment and scenario. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive and up-to-date survey on the communication technologies used in the smart grid, including the communication requirements, physical layer technologies, network architectures, and research challenges. This survey aims to help the readers identify the potential research problems in the continued research on the topic of smart grid communications.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the physical layer secrecy (PLS) performance of a hybrid free space optical and radio frequency (FSO/RF) communication system under a modified selection combining scheme. The transmission scheme takes into account secrecy performance as well as diversity gain and ease of implementation. The effects of FSO link, namely the FSO atmospheric turbulence and the FSO receiver pointing error, are included in the analysis while the power amplifier (PA) inefficiency for the RF transmission is considered to have more realistic understandings on the system performance. The exact analytical expressions for the performance indicators including the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the investigated mixed FSO/RF system are derived. The asymptotic SOP analysis reveals useful insights into the performance of the investigated mixed system. Analytical and simulation results are presented to evaluate the PLS performance of the proposed mixed system as well as to compare the performance of other hybrid systems with different setups.

Abstract: Power line communications (PLC) system performance is severely affected by the presence of impulsive noise and channel gain. Many communication systems employ a combination of forward error correction and automatic repeat request (ARQ) to detect transmission errors known as hybrid ARQ (HARQ). Thus, HARQ can be used to improve the reliability of a PLC system. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a PLC system under the influence of impulsive noise over Rayleigh and Log-Normal channel gains using HARQ with chase combining scheme. Closed-form expressions of the analytical outage probability are derived for these two channel gain scenarios. Using the expression for outage probability, we also compute the average throughput for the PLC system under the given channel gain scenarios. It is observed by the analysis that the outage performance of the considered PLC system is significantly improved with the use of HARQ.

Abstract: In this paper, new exact expressions for evaluating the bit error probability (BEP) of the -ary quadrature amplitude modulation scheme ( -QAM) for a channel model characterized by double gated additive white Gaussian noise (G2AWGN) and Nakagami fading are presented. The derivation of the BEP is performed considering a method in which the multiplicative fading is transformed in an additive noise obtained by dividing the received signal by the estimated fading envelope. In addition, the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative density function (CDF) of the random variable that represents the aforementioned noise are obtained for the G2AWGN. The BEP curves as a function of the signal to permanent noise ratio for several values of the signal to impulsive noise ratio, modulation order, and fading parameters are also presented.

Abstract: A statistical model, based on extensive experimental data, was established to characterize the urban radio propagation medium in various urban environments. Describing the medium by a linear filter, the peaks of the multipath response were analyzed statistically concerning the distribution of the path strength and the path arrival time. The statistical properties of these quantities depend on the modulation delay time. The resulting model can be used for simulation experiments in order to avoid costly hardware tests of ad hoc systems.
