Performance of annular membrane and screen-tee reactors for postcolumn-reaction detection of metal ions separated by liquid chromatography

TLDR
In this paper, the experimental factors that contribute to base line noise in the postcolumn-reaction detection of metal ions eluted from high-performance dynamic ion exchangers have been evaluated and compared for a screen-tee reactor and three annular membrane reactions having internal volumes of 1.5, 5.3 and 9.6
Abstract
The experimental factors that contribute to base line noise in the postcolumn-reaction detection of metal ions eluted from high-performance dynamic ion exchangers have been evaluated and compared for a screen-tee reactor (approx. 1 ..mu..L internal volume) and three annular membrane reactions having internal volumes of 1.5, 5.3, and 9.6 ..mu..L. Measurements of mixing homogeneity, performed with pulseless gas-pressure pumping, showed that both reactor designs gave a mixing homogeneity that was 99.983% of that theoretically possible (perfect mixing) for two solutions differing in absorbance by 2.38 units. For normal operation with high-performance reciprocating pumps for eluent delivery, pump pulsations were responsible for 90-100% of the observed peak-to-peak noise. Column efficiency measurements with a series of lanthanide metal ions gave similar curves for both designs (HETP values of 0.01-0.04 mm). Both reactors gave reproducible peak areas, had good peak shapes, and operated reliably. With the membrane reactors some leakage of eluent into the reagent solution occurred at high eluent or reagent flow rates, but this was not a problem for normal operating conditions.

Preparation and characterization of paramagnetic polychelates and their protein conjugates.

TL;DR: The gadolinium complexes of poly-L-lysine-poly and poly-4,7,10-tetraazacyclodododecane and their conjugates with human serum albumin (HSA) have been prepared and characterized and the molar relaxities were 2-3-fold higher than those of the corresponding monomeric metal complexes.

Determination of rare-earth elements in rocks by liquid chromatography

TL;DR: In this article, a high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure has been developed and tested for the determination of rare-earth elements (REE) in rocks, and the results obtained for a series of rock standards showed good agreement with recommended values and values obtained by isotope-dilution techniques.

Trace analysis of heavy metals in groundwater samples by ion chromatography with post-column reaction and ultraviolet-visible detection.

TL;DR: The lowest detection limits achieved with the Ionpac CS5 column and the 50 mM oxalic acid-95 mM lithium hydroxide eluent enabled the heavy metal analysis in groundwater samples to be reliably performed.

Retention mechamism for reversed-phase ion-pair liquid chromatography

TL;DR: The retention mechanism of reversed-phase "ion-pair" liquid chromatography was investigated in this paper, and it was shown that ion-pair formation does not occur in the mobile phase and the capacity of solute ions is increased by mobile phases containing ion-interaction reagents of the opposite charge over the range 0 to 20 mM.

Sampling and extra-column effects in high-performance liquid chromatography; influence of peak skew on plate count calculations.

TL;DR: Computer simulation studies demonstrated that serious errors can result from calculating column plate count with non-Gaussian peaks and the maximum allowable peak tailing is suggested and a new method for quantitating peak skew is proposed.
