TLDR
Larvae of Laccornellus evolved one unique character state within the Hydroporinae, which is the presence of the primary seta AB15 on ventral surface of last abdominal segment.Abstract:
The first instar of Laccornellus lugubris (Aube) is described. A parsimony analysis of selected taxa of the subfamily Hydroporinae based on 48 informative larval characters was conducted using the program PAUP*. The 100 most parsimonious trees support a placement of Laccornellus Roughley & Wolfe outside the tribe Hydroporini as part of a clade made up of Hydrovatus Motschulsky + Canthyporus Zimmermann, which is supported by the absence of the primary seta UR8 and of the primary seta LA2, and the spine-like condition of the primary seta AB10. Larvae of Laccornellus evolved one unique character state within the Hydroporinae, which is the presence of the primary seta AB15 on ventral surface of last abdominal segment.read more

Systematics of aquatic beetles (Coleoptera): current state and future directions
TL;DR: The current state-of-the-art of water beetle systematics is summarized, including a synthesis of recent literature on how well water beetle taxa are described, the degree to which the authors understand their evolutionary relationships, and in what ways they are being used as model systems in systematics are summarized.

Higher-level phylogeny of diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) based on larval characters
TL;DR: A comprehensive higher‐level phylogeny of diving beetles (Dytiscidae) based on larval characters was studied, covering all currently recognized subfamilies and tribes except for the small and geographically restricted Hydrodytinae, where the larva is unknown.

Yves Alarie,Mariano C. Michat +1 more
TL;DR: Through an analysis of the primary setae and pores of first-instar larvae of 31 genera of Hydroporinae, and 22 genera belonging to other dytiscid subfamilies, the ancestral system ofPrimary setae, pores, and ground plan pattern of the hydroporine maxilla of the HydropOrinae is reconsidered.

Larval morphology of Paroster Sharp, 1882 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae): reinforcement of the hypothesis of monophyletic origin and discussion of phenotypic accommodation to a hypogaeic environment
TL;DR: A cladistic analysis of 41 Hydroporinae species and 63 informative characters supports a monophyletic origin of members of Paroster, which share a labial palpus comprised of three palpomeres and the absence of the primary seta FE7.
