The Genetic Ancestry of African Americans, Latinos, and European Americans across the United States

TL;DR: The authors studied the genetic ancestry of 5,269 self-described African Americans, 8,663 Latinos, and 148,789 European Americans who are 23andMe customers and showed that the legacy of these historical interactions is visible in the genetic lineage of present-day Americans.

"The Genetic Ancestry of African Americans, Latinos, and European Americans Across the United States" data files

TL;DR: It is shown that regional ancestry differences reflect historical events, such as early Spanish colonization, waves of immigration from many regions of Europe, and forced relocation of Native Americans within the US, which informs the understanding of the relationship between racial and ethnic identities and genetic ancestry.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of mutations in the human uncoupling protein 3 gene on the respiratory quotient and fat oxidation in severe obesity and type 2 diabetes.

TL;DR: In exon 6-splice donor heterozygotes, basal fat oxidation rates were reduced by 50%, and the respiratory quotient was markedly increased compared with wild-type individuals, implicating a role for UCP3 in metabolic fuel partitioning.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maxillary Arch Size and Shape in American Blacks and Whites

TL;DR: American blacks have larger teeth than whites, but they less frequently exhibit crowding--apparently because of larger arch dimensions, which are relevant in prosthodontics and orthodontics since individualization of treatment leads to more effective treatment by working within the patient's natural arch form instead of making patients fit a single standard.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mineralization of the mandibular third molar: a study of American blacks and whites.

TL;DR: The third molar provides a rough gauge of an individual's chronological age, but the considerable variability precludes any precise estimate, particularly in late adolescence where most forensic interest has focused.
