Abstract
The authors give a review of alternatives for powering equipment at the customer end of an optical customer access network (CAN). The alternatives include: local, network, hybrid and optical powering. Comparisons are based on the following aspects; operation and maintenance costs, technological constraints, expected problems, safety, and power requirements. Related issues, such as sizing of backup battery, are discussed. Descriptions of a demonstration unit for local powering and optical CAN trials by Telecom Australia are given. >

Communication between network interface device and subscriber devices via power supply lines

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe communication of information between a network interface device and subscriber devices over a power line, where a UPS unit receives operating power from subscriber premises via a first power line and delivers operating power to the network interface devices via a second power line.

Power Transmission by Optical Fibers for Component Inherent Communication

TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarize the state of the a rt for optically powered systems and discuss reasons for negative influences on efficiency, and an outlook on power transmission by the use of a new technology f or creating polymer optical fibers (POF) via micro-dispensing.

Fiber powered extender for XG-PON/G-PON applications

TL;DR: A new approach to power passive optical network (PON) extenders using the power-over-fiber technique, turning them virtually passive, eliminating the batteries in the remote sites, improving the reliability and the security of the system.
