Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation from a self-determination theory perspective: Definitions, theory, practices, and future directions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review research from self-determination theory and show that both intrinsic motivation and well-internalized (and thus autonomous) forms of extrinsic motivation predict an array of positive outcomes across varied educational levels and cultural contexts and are enhanced by supports for students' basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Stress contagion in the classroom? The link between classroom teacher burnout and morning cortisol in elementary school students.

TL;DR: This is the first study to show that teachers' occupational stress is linked to students' physiological stress regulation, and higher levels of classroom teacher burnout significantly predicted the variability in morning cortisol.

How do job characteristics contribute to burnout? Exploring the distinct mediating roles of perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined whether psychological resources (perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness) act as specific mediators between particular job demands and burnout as well as between job resources.

Self-determination theory and the facilitation of intrinsic motivation, social development, and well-being.

Q1. What have the authors contributed in "Predicting intraindividual changes in teacher burnout: the role of perceived school environment and motivational factors" ?

Based on self-determination theory, this study proposes and tests a motivational model of intraindividual changes in teacher burnout ( emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accom-plishment ).

In other words, the effect of environmental demands is particularly detrimental to teachers’ psychological well-being when they perceive that their self-determination and efficacy are threatened.

A third theoretical contribution is their finding that changes in perceptions of certain types of job demands and resources are more salient than others for understanding changes in teachers’ motivational factors and burnout components.
