Rapid-eye-movement sleep behaviour disorder as an early marker for a neurodegenerative disorder: a descriptive study

TL;DR: It is indicated that in people presenting to sleep centres, RBD often antedates the development of a neurodegenerative disorder, which may be of great interest when early effective treatment strategies and neuroprotective drugs become available.
Journal ArticleDOI

The neurobiology of sleep: genetics, cellular physiology and subcortical networks.

TL;DR: To appreciate the neural underpinnings of sleep, it is important to view this universal mammalian behaviour at multiple levels of its biological organization.
Journal ArticleDOI

The cognitive neuroscience of sleep: neuronal systems, consciousness and learning

TL;DR: This work discusses neuronal-network and regional forebrain activity during sleep, and its consequences for consciousness and cognition, and indicates possible roles for sleep in neuroplasticity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sleep, learning, and dreams: off-line memory reprocessing

TL;DR: Evidence supports a role for sleep in the consolidation of an array of learning and memory tasks and new methodologies allow the experimental manipulation of dream content at sleep onset, permitting an objective and scientific study of this dream formation and a renewed search for the possible functions of dreaming and the biological processes subserving it.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of sleep-promoting neurons in vitro

TL;DR: It is proposed that the reciprocal inhibitory interaction of such VLPO neurons with the noradrenergic, serotoninergic and cholinergic waking systems to which they project is a key factor for promoting sleep.
