Rate of humidifier and humidifier disinfectant usage in Korean children: A nationwide epidemiologic study

TLDR
The results suggest that a nationwide epidemiologic investigation is needed urgently, and children exposed to HD should be investigated regarding their status of lung injury, including a pulmonary function test.

Ten-year trends and prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis among the Korean population, 2008-2017.

TL;DR: The results of this nationwide cross-sectional survey improve the understanding of the age-stratified epidemiology of allergic diseases in Korea and suggest the need for the development of tailored and precise strategies to prevent allergy diseases in different age groups.

Critical window of exposure of CMIT/MIT with respect to developmental effects on zebrafish embryos: Multi-level endpoint and proteomics analysis.

TL;DR: The results showed that CMIT/MIT exposure causes bent tail, pericardial edema, altered heart rates, global DNA hypermethylation and significant alterations in the locomotion behavior, which could potentially be translated to a risk assessment of the developmental exposure effects to the humidifier disinfectants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Children and adults are exposed to dual risks from ingestion of water and inhalation of ultrasonic humidifier particles from Pb-containing water.

TL;DR: In this paper, water ingestion along with inhalation doses from humidifiers for 10-1000 μg/L dissolved lead (Pb) in tap water were evaluated under four room scenarios for 3-mo, 12mo, 28-mo and 6-yr children and adults.
Journal ArticleDOI

The past, present, and future of humidifier disinfectant-associated interstitial lung diseases in children.

TL;DR: The summary of clinical features, pathologic findings, and changes in radiologic findings over time in patients with HD-ILDs and the results of previous experimental research on the mechanisms underlying the effects of toxic chemicals in HDs suggest that investigation of the pathophysiologies underlying HD-ILEs is needed in addition to the identification of susceptibility to HD-IDEs.

Fatal Misuse of Humidifier Disinfectants in Korea: Importance of Screening Risk Assessment and Implications for Management of Chemicals in Consumer Products

TL;DR: According to the authorities, as of August 31, 2011, 28 adults, including 13 pregnant women, have been hospitalized because of this unidentified lung disease similar to acute interstitial pneumonia in Korea.

A cluster of lung injury associated with home humidifier use: clinical, radiological and pathological description of a new syndrome

TL;DR: This case series report showed that lung injury and respiratory failure can occur as a result of inhaling humidifier disinfectants and emphasises the need for more stringent safety regulations for potentially toxic inhalants that might be encountered in the home.
