Top-down reconstruction and the failure to “build back better” resilient communities after disaster: lessons from the 2009 L'Aquila Italy earthquake

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider what happened in the initial reconstruction interventions following the 6 April 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila (Italy) and discuss the cognitive and interactional failures of top-down approaches, and analyse the main constraints to enacting inclusive social learning and socially sustainable transformation and building back better more resilient communities in post-disaster reconstruction.

Industry 4.0-based dynamic Social Organizational Life Cycle Assessment to target the social circular economy in manufacturing

TL;DR: In this paper, a blended methodological approach was designed to dynamically monitor the social performance of a major manufacturing industry. But the authors pointed out that the digital transition of factories and Industry 4.0 technologies have not yet been fully exploited to correlate production and social metrics, and there is a lack of adequate tools for monitoring social performance in the factory environment.

Navigating trade-offs between dams and river conservation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a set of tested and proven solutions to navigate trade-offs associated with river conservation and dam development, including avoidance through either formal river protection or through exploration of alternative development options; minimization of impacts through strategic or system-scale planning or re-regulation of downstream flows; restoration of rivers through dam removal; and mitigation of dam impacts through biodiversity offsets that include restoration and protection of FFRs.

The effectiveness of the social impact assessment (SIA) in energy transition management: Stakeholders' insights from renewable energy projects in Mexico

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the effectiveness of the social impact assessment (SIA) in Mexico's renewable energy (RE) sector and argue that without a substantial internalization of social dimension in the priorities, policy, and planning of RE, the SIA would be limited to a problem-fixing role, which would constrain the effective management of social impacts.

Enhancing Indigenous impact assessment: Lessons from Indigenous planning theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue for a third space that facilitates coexistence of different forms of IA activity rather than integration of Indigenous endeavours into broader IA types, and demonstrate the potential of Indigenous planning theory to connect international dialogue and case studies on Indigenous impact assessment, and to broaden and deepen IA theory and practice.

Conceptualising social impacts

TL;DR: The conceptual framework based on environmental function evaluation of Slootweg et al. as discussed by the authors is used as the basis for conceptualizing social impacts. But the importance of differentiating between social impacts and social change processes is highlighted, and a new listing of some 80-odd indicative social impacts is developed reflecting a change from project-based thinking to inclusion of the impacts of policies and programs.

Social impact assessment: the state of the art

TL;DR: In this paper, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of social impact assessment (SIA) have been analyzed, and it is argued that the SIA community needs to revisit core concepts, such as culture, community, power, human rights, gender, justice, place, resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
