TLDR
In this paper, the authors explore the possible links between subordinates' personality traits and their preference for transformational vs transactional leadership style and find that the personality trait of conformity correlated significantly with intellectual stimulation, indicating that nonconformers prefer leaders who provide intellectual stimulation.

A Quantitative Review of Research on Charismatic Leadership

Personal Attributes as Predictors of Superiors' and Subordinates' Perceptions of Military Academy Leadership

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between military academy leaders' personal attributes (e.g., traits, thinking styles) and others' ratings of transformational and transactional leadership was assessed. But the relevant predictors differed as a function of the positions of the individuals who rated leadership (i.e., superiors vs. subordinates of focal leaders).

TL;DR: The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass, 1985) was administered to police officers in New Zealand (Study 1) and to employees of three companies in Taiwan (Study 2) and results showed that siruational constraints affected actual leader behavior, as well as leadership preference scores as mentioned in this paper.

Is Transformational Leadership Universal? A Meta-Analytical Investigation of Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Means Across Cultures

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effects of cultural values on reported levels of transformational leadership and found that higher cultural mastery and higher egalitarianism would be associated with greater transformational leaders.

Toward a behavioral theory of leadership

TL;DR: In this paper, a system of three distinct leader behavior dimensions is proposed to reduce the apparent inconsistency in the leadership literature and to the absence of a conceptual framework which includes intermediate and situational variables.

Leadership preference, leadership behavior, and employee satisfaction

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated five leadership dimensions and seven satisfaction criteria in two state highway department bureaus and found that the discrepancy and interactive models were not more strongly related to criteria than leadership behavior alone.

Transformational vs transactional leadership: a study of new zealand company managers

TL;DR: In this article, the authors found that managers preferred working with leaders who are more transformational than transactional, and that the discrepancy scores between the ratings of real and ideal leaders were negatively correlated with the measures of effectiveness and satisfaction.
