On the Unexpected Use of Unenforceable Contract Terms: Evidence from the Residential Rental Market

TL;DR: Furth et al. as discussed by the authors analyzed a sample of seventy residential leases from the Greater Boston Area in terms of Massachusetts Landlord and Tenant Law and found that landlords often use deceptive and clearly invalid provisions in their contracts, and regularly fail to disclose the vast majority of the mandatory rights and remedies that the law bestows upon tenants in their leases.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study the economics of employment relationships through theoretical and empirical analysis of an unusual set of firms, large law firms, and argue that the two most distinctive organizational features of large law firm, the use of "up or out" promotion contests and the practice of having winners become residual claimants in the firm, emerge naturally in this setting.
