TLDR
Worms that had been subjected to amoscanate or hycanthone in the third week after infection showed evidence of this as adults in having a reduced fecundity, and factors such as worm or host physiology, or host immune status may have had roles in the outcome of chemotherapy at different stages of maturation of S. mansoni.

Praziquantel: mechanisms of action, resistance and new derivatives for schistosomiasis.

TL;DR: Use of PZQ will increase in the foreseeable future, whether given alone or coadministered with other anthelminthics in integrated control programmes, as well as inhibitors of a schistosome-specific bifunctional enzyme, thioredoxin-glutathione reductase.
Journal ArticleDOI

Time to set the agenda for schistosomiasis elimination.

TL;DR: An agenda for the elimination of schistosomiasis would aim to identify the gaps in knowledge, and define the tools, strategies and guidelines that will help national control programmes move towards elimination, including an internationally accepted mechanism that allows verification/confirmation of elimination.
Journal ArticleDOI

Resistance to praziquantel: direct evidence from Schistosoma mansoni isolated from Egyptian villagers.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the in vitro action of the drug is related to its in vivo action and this relationship will assist in the ability to detect or survey for the PZQ resistant phenotype in human populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis: common drugs for treatment and control

TL;DR: The geographical distribution, life cycle and global burden of schistosomiasis and STH is summarized, and the current arsenal of drugs available for morbidity control, including discovery, chemistry, pharmacological properties and aspects of therapeutic efficacy and adverse events in clinical human use are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase from Schistosoma mansoni: An Essential Parasite Enzyme and a Key Drug Target

TL;DR: Investigating the potential of a unique, selenium-containing parasite enzyme thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR) as a drug target indicates that parasite TGR meets all the major criteria to be a key target for antischistosomal chemotherapy.

The infection of laboratory hosts with cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni and the recovery of the adult worms.

S. R. Smithers, +1 more
- 01 Nov 1965 -
TL;DR: Smithers and Terry as discussed by the authors described techniques which are rapid and do not require great skill in their performance, and in their hands they have given very consistent results, in this respect they believe that these techniques have advantages over others which are currently practised.
Journal ArticleDOI

Praziquantel, a new board-spectrum antischistosomal agent.

TL;DR: Praziquantel is equally effective against both sexes of S. mansoni and less effective against unpaired and therefore juvenile female worms, but fully effective against single male worms.
Journal Article

In vivo and in vitro experiments on the effects of praziquantel on Schistosoma mansoni. A light and electron microscopic study.

TL;DR: The effects of 2-cyclohexylcarbonyl-1,2,3,6,7,11b-hexahydro-4H-pyrazino[2,1-a]isoquinolin-4-one on Schistosoma mansoni was studied in vivo and in vitro by means of electron microscopy.

Schistosoma mansoni: Reduced efficacy of chemotherapy in infected T-cell-deprived mice

TL;DR: The effect of host immunosuppression on the efficacy of schistosomicidal chemotherapy has been tested in T-cell-deprived CBA mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni, and the possibility that hycanthone, oxamniquine, praziquantel, and previously studied antimony act synergistically with immune effector mechanisms in killing adultschistosomes is discussed.
