TLDR
Irrespective of the incubation conditions, pregnenolone produced more Δ5-3β-hydroxy-thanΔ4-3-ketosteroids, suggesting a predominance of the former biosynthetic pathway, and among the unidentified metabolites, water-soluble compounds were formed from both precursors in intact tissue incubates.

7 The Gonadal Steroids

TL;DR: This chapter discusses that the gonads potentiality to produce steroids, and the regulation of the syntheses; and the actual physiological role of gonadal steroids in fish is discussed with emphasis on gametogenesis.

Gonad histology and plasma steroid profiles in wild New Zealand freshwater eels (Anguilla dieffenbachii and A. australis) before and at the onset of the natural spawning migration. II. Males

TL;DR: In this paper, a radioimmunoassay analysis of the testes of mature and maturing male New Zealand freshwater eels was carried out to obtain data on the natural reproductive physiology of these fish.
Journal ArticleDOI

Eel (Anguilla japonica) testis 11β-hydroxylase gene is expressed in interrenal tissue and its product lacks aldosterone synthesizing activity

TL;DR: Results show that eel P450(11beta) does not possess significant aldosterone synthesizing activity and is therefore unlikely to possess significant corticosteroid synthesis activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular cloning and characterization of Japanese eel ovarian P450c17 (CYP17) cDNA.

TL;DR: The present data suggest that changes in C(17-20) lyase activity (the production of androgens) do not depend on transcriptional changes of the P450c17 gene.

In vitro metabolism of 4-pregnenes in ovaries of a freshwater teleost, the ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis): Production of 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one and its 5β-reduced metabolites, and activation of 3β- and 20β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases by treatment with a fish gonadotropin

TL;DR: By the treatment of the fish with gonadotropin, ovarian 3β- and 20β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases were selectively activated in vitro steroidogenesis in the mature ovaries of a freshwater teleost.

Identification and quantification of the major androgens in testicular and peripheral plasma of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) during sexual maturation

TL;DR: The concentration in testicular plasma increased in the late stages of maturation; this observation is consistent with the conclusion based on in vitro incubations that 11β-hydroxytestosterone is a precursor of 11-ketotestosterone in testis.

Egg proteins in cod serum. Natural occurrence and induction by injections of oestradiol 3-benzoate.

TL;DR: Egg proteins were detected in the liver and testes of the injected fish, but not in the ovaries, and showed that the concentrations of the normal serum components fell by 20-50% of the initial value, the high-molecular-weight globulins showing the most marked fall.

In vitro maturation and ovulation of oocytes of the catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch): effects of mammalian hypophyseal hormones, catfish pituitary homogenate, steroid precursors and metabolites, and gonadal and adrenocortical steroids.

TL;DR: Results strongly suggest that inasmuch as LH and catfish pituitary homogenate per se do not induce oocyte maturation in vitro, the terminal hormones which act directly on the oocytes to induce maturation and ovulation are the corticosteroids principally, DOC and F.
