Supporting Controlled Experimentation with Testing Techniques: An Infrastructure and its Potential Impact

TLDR
The infrastructure that is being designed and constructed to support controlled experimentation with testing and regression testing techniques is described and the impact that this infrastructure has had and can be expected to have.
Abstract
Where the creation, understanding, and assessment of software testing and regression testing techniques are concerned, controlled experimentation is an indispensable research methodology. Obtaining the infrastructure necessary to support such experimentation, however, is difficult and expensive. As a result, progress in experimentation with testing techniques has been slow, and empirical data on the costs and effectiveness of techniques remains relatively scarce. To help address this problem, we have been designing and constructing infrastructure to support controlled experimentation with testing and regression testing techniques. This paper reports on the challenges faced by researchers experimenting with testing techniques, including those that inform the design of our infrastructure. The paper then describes the infrastructure that we are creating in response to these challenges, and that we are now making available to other researchers, and discusses the impact that this infrastructure has had and can be expected to have.

Enhancing structural software coverage by incrementally computing branch executability

TL;DR: A technique is proposed that both generates test cases that execute yet uncovered branches and identifies infeasible branches that can be eliminated from the computation of the branch coverage, which can increase branch coverage to closely approximate full coverage, thus improving its industrial value.

PHALANX: a graph-theoretic framework for test case prioritization

TL;DR: This paper abstracts a test-case dissimilarity graph, a weighted graph in which nodes specify test cases and weighted edges specify user-defined proximity measures between test cases, and argues that a declustered linearization of nodes in the graph results in a desirable prioritization of test cases.

A Study in Prioritization for Higher Strength Combinatorial Testing

TL;DR: It is found that early fault detection can be improved when prioritizing 3-way CIT test suites by interactions that cover more code, and to a lesser degree when generating tests in prioritized order.

Hierarchical dynamic slicing

TL;DR: This work addresses the deficiency of dynamic slicing by hierarchically applying dynamic slicing at various levels of granularity by dividing a program execution trace into "phases", with data/control dependencies inside each phase being suppressed.

A Systematic Literature Review of How Mutation Testing Supports Quality Assurance Processes

TL;DR: The results show that most studies use mutation testing as an assessment tool targeting unit tests, and many of the supporting techniques for making mutation testing applicable in practice are still underdeveloped.
