Das leicht polymerisierbare 1.4-Diacetoxy-2-vinyl-naphthalin (6) wird dargestellt. Seine Verseifung mit nachfolgender Oxydation ergibt nicht 2-Vinyl-naphthochinon-(1.4), sondern es bilden sich Dimerisierungsprodukte, deren Struktur geklart werden konnte (8–10).

This review summarizes our work on the synthesis and redox properties of polymers with various quinone–hydroquinone systems. Information is given on our attempts to increase the chemical stability of the redox resins by suitable substitution and by other methods. The redox properties were thoroughly investigated (e.g. redox potentials, redox capacity, rate of the redox reaction). A theoretical treatment is given for the redox behaviour of tetra- and hexa-valent redox systems. Redox resins can be used as insoluble, regenerable oxidants or reductants. By means of these resins some organic substrates could be dehydrogenated and several metal ions could be reduced or deposited.

Die Reaktion von 2-[1-Brom-athyl]- (1a) bzw. 2-Methyl-3-[1-brom-athyl]-naphthochinon (1b) mit Silberpulver liefert Gemische isomerer Dimerisierungsprodukte, deren Struktur geklart wird. Durch fraktionierte Kristallisation wurden meso- und racem.-2.3-Bis-[naphtho-chinon-(1.4)-yl-(2)]-butan (2a, 3a) bzw. meso- und racem.-2.3-Bis-[3-methyl-naphthochinon-(1.4)-yl-(2)]-butan (2b, 3b) getrennt. Bei der potentiometrischen Titration in Eisessig/Wasser (4:1) bzw. Eisessig/0.2m NH4OAc zeigt die racem.-Form stets die grosere Zwischenstufenbildungskonstante, bei den sterisch gehinderten Diastereomeren 2b/3b wird zusatzlich eine Beeinflussung des Mittelpunktspotentials gefunden.

The reaction of 2-(l-bromoethyl)- (1a) or 3-(l-bromoethyl)-2-methyl-naphthoquinone (1b) with silver powder affords a mixture of isomeric dimers, the structures of which were elucidated. We separated meso- and rac.-2.3-bis(1.4-naphthoquinone-2-yl)butane (2a,3a) as well as meso- and rac.-2.3-bis(3-methyl-1.4-naphthoquinone-2-yl)butane (2b, 3b) by fractional crystallisation. The redistribution constant k — obtained by potentiometric titration — was found always larger for the racemate than for the meso-form. In the case of the sterically hindered compounds 2b/3b the midpoint potential was also affected.
