Using TaintDroid to monitor the behavior of 30 popular third-party Android applications, this work found 68 instances of misappropriation of users' location and device identification information across 20 applications.
Abstract
Today's smartphone operating systems frequently fail to provide users with adequate control over and visibility into how third-party applications use their private data. We address these shortcomings with TaintDroid, an efficient, system-wide dynamic taint tracking and analysis system capable of simultaneously tracking multiple sources of sensitive data. TaintDroid provides realtime analysis by leveraging Android's virtualized execution environment. TaintDroid incurs only 14% performance overhead on a CPU-bound micro-benchmark and imposes negligible overhead on interactive third-party applications. Using TaintDroid to monitor the behavior of 30 popular third-party Android applications, we found 68 instances of potential misuse of users' private information across 20 applications. Monitoring sensitive data with TaintDroid provides informed use of third-party applications for phone users and valuable input for smartphone security service firms seeking to identify misbehaving applications.

Droidetec: Android Malware Detection and Malicious Code Localization through Deep Learning.

TL;DR: Droidetec, a deep learning based method for android malware detection and malicious code localization, is proposed to model an application program as a natural language sequence, which allows Droidetec to automatically analyze the semantics of sequence segments and eventually find out the malicious code.

CoChecker: Detecting Capability and Sensitive Data Leaks from Component Chains in Android

TL;DR: This paper introduces the tool, CoChecker, to identify the leak paths (chains of components) that would lead to privilege escalation attacks using static taint analysis, and proposes to build a call graph to model the execution of multiple entry points in a component and eliminate the false negatives due to the Android’s event-driven programming paradigm.

On the Feasibility of Malware Attacks in Smartphone Platforms

TL;DR: It is proved that, under certain circumstances, all examined platforms could be used by average developers as privacy attack vector, harvesting data from the device without the users knowledge and consent.

Detection of Deviations in Mobile Applications Network Behavior

TL;DR: Evaluation experiments demonstrate that: (1) various applications have specific network traffic patterns and certain application categories can be distinguishable by their network patterns, and (3) local learning is feasible and has a low performance overhead on mobile devices.

Invetter: Locating Insecure Input Validations in Android Services

TL;DR: This paper design and implement a tool, called Invetter, that combines machine learning and static analysis to locate sensitive input validations that are problematic in system services and confirms that at least 20 of them are truly exploitable vulnerabilities.

Dynamic Taint Analysis for Automatic Detection, Analysis, and Signature Generation of Exploits on Commodity Software

TL;DR: TaintCheck as mentioned in this paper performs dynamic taint analysis by performing binary rewriting at run time, which can reliably detect most types of exploits and produces no false positives for any of the many different programs that were tested.

JFlow: practical mostly-static information flow control

TL;DR: The new language JFlow is described, an extension to the Java language that adds statically-checked information flow annotations and provides several new features that make information flow checking more flexible and convenient than in previous models.
