Abstract
The observational properties of the ten known AM Her systems are reviewed. A multitude of components of continuum and line radiation from these objects are outlined. We discuss the important physical processes involved in the accretion flow and funnel shock, with emphasis on the properties of the emission line regions. Other topics include the properties of the white dwarf primaries and M dwarf secondaries, the maintenance of synchronous rotation, and the implications of “dumpings” in the known orbital periods (80–115 minutes) and magnetic field strengths (20-35 megagauss).

Evolution of Cataclysmic Binaries

TL;DR: In this article, a standard scenario for the evolutionary origin of cataclysmic binaries is presented, where the initial periods of the ancestor binaries was between a few months and a few years, and the initial mass ratio was very different from unity.

Sustained magnetic fields in binary millisecond pulsars

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the magnetic fields of binary millisecond pulsars do not decay either in such binary radio pulsars or in general, and that most of them are likely to have been formed from the accretion-induced magnetic flux and angular momentum-conserving collapse of white dwarfs.

The Three-dimensional Structure of Extreme-Ultraviolet Accretion Regions in AM Herculis Stars: Modeling of Extreme-Ultraviolet Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a model of the high-energy accretion region for magnetic cataclysmic variables and applied it to Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer observations of 10 AM Herculis type systems.

Accretion in the High-Field Magnetic Cataclysmic Variable AR Ursae Majoris

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report the results of a long program of photometry, spectroscopy, and spectropolarimetry of the object that was undertaken with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the role that the white dwarf field plays in shaping the properties of the magnetic systems.

Accretion-driven stellar X-ray sources

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present papers on accretion-driven stellar X-ray sources, including Xray bursters and the Xray sources of the galactic bulge, and Xray emission from normal galaxies.

The evolution of highly compact binary stellar systems

TL;DR: In this paper, a new theoretical treatment of the evolution of highly compact binary systems is presented, where almost the entire mass of the secondary has been transferred to the primary or lost from the system.

Accretion onto magnetized neutron stars: structure and interchange instability of a model magnetosphere.

TL;DR: In this paper, a self-consistent model for the spherical infall of weakly magnetized plasma into the magnetosphere of a slowly rotating, strongly magnetized neutron star is presented.
