A census of singing Corncrakes throughout Britain was carried out in 1993 as discussed by the authors, where a total of 480 singing males were counted in 83 10-km squares in 83 islands of the UK.
Abstract
A census of singing Corncrakes throughout Britain was carried out in 1993. Ten-kilometre National Grid squares in Scotland which held the species in 1978179 and/or 1988 were searched systematically by night. Elsewhere records of singing birds were obtained by means of publicity and checked for accuracy. A total of 480 singing males was counted in 83 10-km squares. Ninety-two per cent of the population was found in the Hebridean Islands. The total count was 17% smaller than in 1988 and at least 34% less than in 1978. The average rate of population decline between 1988 and 1993 was 3.5% per year, which was more rapid than during the previous 10 years. There were considerable differences among islands and areas in the rate of change of the Corncrake population. In some areas the population had increased, but in Orkney there had been an 82% decline in 5 years. Areas with high rates of decline between 1978 and 1988 also tended to show rapid declines between 1988 and 1993. The census results and conservation me...

Changes in the abundance of farmland birds in relation to the timing of agricultural intensification in England and Wales.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed trends in agricultural management in order to quantify the degree of intensification, and have considered how they match change in the farmland bird community, and concluded that large shifts in agriculture management are a plausible explanation for the declines in farmland bird populations.

The management of lowland neutral grasslands in Britain: effects of agricultural practices on birds and their food resources

TL;DR: There is now a need to improve understanding of how grassland management affects bird population dynamics, and the interaction between predation rates and management-related changes in habitat is particularly important.

Local extinctions and changes in species richness of lowland farmland birds in England and Wales in relation to recent changes in agricultural land-use.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined spatial change in the ranges of 21 farmland bird species at the scale of 10 km squares in relation to spatial changes in agricultural land-use variables between the late 1960s and the late 1980s.

Habitat characteristics affecting use of lowland agricultural grassland by birds in winter

TL;DR: The authors investigated the influence of variation in sward structure, grassland management and landscape variables on the use of 77 grass fields by 14 field-feeding bird species wintering on lowland mixed farmland in southern England.

Map of bird sensitivities to wind farms in Scotland: A tool to aid planning and conservation

TL;DR: In this article, a map of bird sensitivities has been created to guide the location of onshore wind farms in Scotland, based on distributions of 16 bird species of conservation priority and statutory Special Protection Areas.

1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals

TL;DR: The "1994 Red List of Threatened Animals" as mentioned in this paper was a major advance on its predecessors in clarity of layout and amount of information presented, and was taken further in the 1996 edition, which was also the first global compilation to use the complete new IUCN red list category system.
