The effect of dietary arachidonic acid (20:4n−6) on growth, survival and resistance to handling stress in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) larvae

TLDR
The results suggest that dietary AA fed prior to handling stress improved survival more effectively than when fed following handling stress, and imply the importance of early larval nutrition on later larval and juvenile survival during crowding, grading and other handling stressors.

Fatty acid requirements in ontogeny of marine and freshwater fish

TL;DR: It is particularly important to note that the physiological requirements of the fish to prevent deficiency pathologies and produce optimal growth may not parallel the requirements for maintaining nutritional quality, so salmonids can be successfully cultured on vegetable oils devoid of long-chain n-3 PUFA but not without potentially compromising their health benefits to the human consumer.

Arachidonic acid in aquaculture feeds: current status and future opportunities

TL;DR: The results will undoubtedly emphasise why this ubiquitous HUFA cannot be underestimated in fish nutrition and already the potential benefits to fish physiology and biochemistry of optimising the ARA nutrition of fish are becoming clear.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nutritional components affecting skeletal development in fish larvae

TL;DR: The effects of some nutritional components on skeletal development in larvae of a number of fish species are reviewed and it appears that dietary incorporation of 20 amino acid peptides or di- and tripeptides leads to a reduction of spinal malformations in sea bass.

Essential fatty acids in the planktonic food web and their ecological role for higher trophic levels

TL;DR: It is suggested that, in general, zooplankton exhibit an EPA-retentive metabolism with increasing body size, whereas different taxonomic groups within the planktonic food web retain DHA differently.

A simple method for the isolation and purification of total lipides from animal tissues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described a simplified version of the method and reported the results of a study of its application to different tissues, including the efficiency of the washing procedure in terms of the removal from tissue lipides of some non-lipide substances of special biochemical interest.

Nutritional values of live organisms used in Japan for mass propagation of fish: A review

TL;DR: The EFA content ofrotifers supplied with yeast during the culture period was less favourable for larval fish growth than that of rotifers given marine Chlorella, and the nutritional value of yeast-fed rotifer may be improved by the use of the recently developed ω-yeast or by feeding with a mixture of homogenized lipids and baker's yeast.
Journal ArticleDOI

Importance of Docosahexaenoic Acid in Marine Larval Fish

TL;DR: It is revealed that in marine larval fish DHA is superior to EPA as EFA, and the incidence of hydrops seemed to be totally prevented dietetically by DHA in red seabream and similar results were obtained in larval yellowtail, striped jack, striped knifejaw and flounder.

Nutrition and Feeding in Fish

TL;DR: This chapter discusses nutrition and feeding in fish, and some examples from the literature show the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet of fish.
