Although numerous attempts have been made to estimate the amount of free choline present in blood and tissue fluids, there is little consistency in the results obtained. Table 1 summarizes previous assays of free choline in blood, plasma and serum, and shows a wide scatter of values ranging from l to 75,ug/ml. The effect of quite small doses of choline hydrochloride upon blood pressure (Dale, 1914) and the recent observation by Hutter (1952) that an intravenous injection of as little as 2 mg of choline hydrochloride per kg body weight has an effect upon neuromuscular transmission in the cat, suggest that such a wide range of values is unlikely.read more

TL;DR: The synthesis, storage, and release of acetylcholine were studied in perfused and intact superior cervical ganglia of cats and determined by bio-assay in ganglion extracts and in the venous ganglia.

High affinity transport of choline into synaptosomes of rat brain.

TL;DR: A variety of evidence suggests that the high affinity transport represents a selective accumulation of choline by cholinergic neurons, while the low affinity uptake system has some less specific function.

Tumour phospholipid metabolism.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an overview on quantitative MRS measurements on the contents of phosphocholine (PCho), phosphoethanolamine (PEtn) and their glycerol derivatives, and their current and new hypotheses on the role and interplay of biosynthetic and catabolic pathways of the choline and ethanolamine cycles in modulating the intracellular sizes of PCho and PEtn pools, either in response to mitogenic stimuli or in relation to malignant transformation.

Brain acetylcholine: control by dietary choline.
TL;DR: The increases in brain acetylcholine after treatment with physositigmine (an inhibitor of actylcholinesterase) or after consumption of a diet high in choline are additive, suggesting that choline acts by increasing acetylCholine synthesis.

TL;DR: The fluoromethyl choline analog FCH may serve as a probe of choline uptake and phosphorylation in cancer cells, whereas fluoroethyl (FEC) and fluoropropyl (FPC) analogs appear to have relatively poorer biologic compatibility.
