TLDR
Activity so defined was shown by a variety of microorganisms, such as yeast, Penicillium qlaucum, and Asperqillus niqer, and by Bacillus coli, Bacillus proteus, and staphylococcus and it is apparent that these ester bonds may be broken without the separation of phosphoric acid from any of the four nucleotides.

Journal ArticleDOI

The Interaction of Metal Ions with Polynucleotides and Related Compounds XIII. THE EFFECT OF METAL IONS ON THE ENZYMATIC DEGRADATION OF RIBONUCLEIC ACID BY BOVINE PANCREATIC RIBONUCLEASE AND OF DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID BY BOVINE PANCREATIC DEOXYRIBONUCLEASE I

TL;DR: Co(II) activates deoxyribonuclease I better than the metals that have generally been used for this purpose and the resulting curves can be correlated with the stability constants of complexes of the transition metals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interactions of metal ions with polynucleotides and related compounds. IV. Degradation of polyribonucleotides by zinc and other divalent metal ions.

TL;DR: No drastic difference in the nucleotide composition of the undegraded residue can be observed in the degradation of RNA by zinc and by alkali, as well as in the alkaline degradation of polynucleotides.
Journal ArticleDOI

Exocellular Enzymes of Corn Roots.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that several exocellular hydrolytic enzymes are associated with the roots of intact corn seedlings, supporting the concept that such enzymes could solubilize macromolecular constituents of organic soils, permitting uptake and utilization by the plant of the resultant low molecular weight organic compounds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Antagonisms between Kinetin and Amino Acids: Experiments on the Mode of Action of Cytokinins.

TL;DR: In this article, the maintenance of chlorophyll in darkened first leaves of oats was used as a bioassay for cytokinins in pea (Pisum sativum) roots.
Journal ArticleDOI

On the action of ribonuclease.

TL;DR: How many of the total pyrimidine nucleotide groups of yeast ribonucleic acid are hydrolyzable by ribonuclease is the problem of the present investigation.

The Determination of Hydrogen Ions

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-phase liquid-metal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator is used to eliminate dissipative boundary layer electrical shunts by displacing the slow moving, conducting liquid boundary layer adjacent the insulating walls of the generator with a thin gas layer.
