TLDR
This article examined whether education has a causal impact on health and found that it has a large and positive correlation between education and health, and that this effect is perhaps larger than has been previously estimated in the literature.
Abstract
Prior research has uncovered a large and positive correlation between education and health. This paper examines whether education has a causal impact on health. I follow synthetic cohorts using successive U.S. censuses to estimate the impact of educational attainment on mortality rates. I use compulsory education laws from 1915 to 1939 as instruments for education. The results suggest that education has a causal impact on mortality, and that this effect is perhaps larger than has been previously estimated in the literature. Copyright 2005, Wiley-Blackwell.

The Economic Value of Education for Longer Lives and Reduced Disability

TL;DR: The value of education for longer, healthier lives may surpass the value for earnings, and estimates of the economic value of the social determinants of health, such as education, can help policymakers prioritize those policies that provide the greatest value for population health.

Does intensive coaching reduce school dropout? Evidence from a randomized experiment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of an intensive coaching program aimed at reducing school dropout rates among students aged 16-20, and found that one year of coaching significantly reduced the dropout rate from 17 to 10 percentage points.

What we learn in school: Cognitive and non-cognitive skills in the educational production function

Garcia Garcia, +1 more
TL;DR: Garcia et al. as mentioned in this paper revisited the traditional educational production function, offering alternative strategies to model how achievement and socio-emotional skills enter the relationship and how they are affected during the schooling period.

News from the NIH: research to evaluate "natural experiments" related to obesity and diabetes.

TL;DR: The increasing challenges of obesity and its related health conditions in the authors' society also coincide with a dynamic time for health care in the USA, including changing consumer demands (employers and individuals) and the pressing need to deliver evidence-based care, improve health outcomes for all Americans, and control costs.

Commentary: Samuel Preston's 'The changing relation between mortality and level of economic development'.

TL;DR: The article argues the point that public and personal health interventions have had a measurable impact upon mortality over and above what would have been expected from economic expansion alone.

Instrumental variables regression with weak instruments

Douglas O. Staiger, +1 more
- 01 May 1997 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed asymptotic distribution theory for instrumental variable regression when the partial correlation between the instruments and a single included endogenous variable is weak, here modeled as local to zero.

On the Concept of Health Capital and the Demand for Health

TL;DR: A model of the demand for the commodity "good health" is constructed and it is shown that the shadow price rises with age if the rate of depreciation on the stock of health rises over the life cycle and falls with education if more educated people are more efficient producers of health.

Problems with Instrumental Variables Estimation when the Correlation between the Instruments and the Endogenous Explanatory Variable is Weak

TL;DR: In this article, the use of instruments that explain little of the variation in the endogenous explanatory variables can lead to large inconsistencies in the IV estimates even if only a weak relationship exists between the instruments and the error in the structural equation.

Identification of Causal Effects Using Instrumental Variables

TL;DR: It is shown that the instrumental variables (IV) estimand can be embedded within the Rubin Causal Model (RCM) and that under some simple and easily interpretable assumptions, the IV estimand is the average causal effect for a subgroup of units, the compliers.
