Smectite diagenesis in neogene marine sandstone and mudstone of the niigata basin, japan
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the evolution of smectite during progressive burial diagenesis in sandstone and mudstone, which are interbedded in the sedimentary sequence of the Niigata basin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental mixtures of smectite and rectorite: Re-investigation of “fundamental particles” and “interparticle diffraction”
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors made physical mixtures of smectite and rectorite and examined them by X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy, and the results strongly suggest that interparticle diffraction occurs, and that interstratified structures are formed by mixing rectoritic and smectitic specimens when the particle size in the a-b plane and the particle thickness are appropriate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Kinetics of long-term illitization of montmorillonite—a natural analogue of thermal alteration of bentonite in the radioactive waste disposal system
TL;DR: A tertiary argillaceous rock formation and a quarternary intrusive rock which intruded into the former, distributed in the Nishikubiki district of Niigata prefecture in central Japan, has been investigated as a natural analogue of bentonite alteration in a repository for high-level radioactive waste as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reconstruction of palaeothermal conditions in a passive margin using illite-smectite mixed-layer series (BA1 scientific deep drill-hole, Ardeche, France)
C. Renac,A. Meunier +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a comparison between measured and predicted smectite percent (%Sm) in an illite-smectite (l-S) mixed-layer series was used to estimate the thermal conditions of diagenesis in the Ard~che sedimentary series.
Journal ArticleDOI
Smectite and illite/smectite mixed-layer clay minerals in the Ashibetsu coals
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the composition of I/S mixed-layer clays depends mainly on processes associated with the source of the original sediment input, and that the illitization appears to be related to the burial depth and/or coal rank.

Mechanism of burial metamorphism of argillaceous sediment: 1. Mineralogical and chemical evidence
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed mineralogical and chemical investigation of shale cuttings from a well (Case Western Reserve University Gulf Coast 6) in Oligocene-Miocene sediment of the Gulf Coast of the United States was made by x-ray diffraction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clay Diagenesis in Wilcox Sandstones of Southwest Texas: Implications of Smectite Diagenesis on Sandstone Cementation
James R. Boles,Stephen G. Franks +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a diagenetic model is proposed which involves the breakdown of detrital K-feldspar and of some smectite layers in illite/smectite to convert other smectitite layers to illite.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Nature of Interlayering in Mixed-Layer Illite-Montmorillonites
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the interstratification of mixed-layer illite-montmorillonites by comparison of diffraction patterns with calculated one-dimensional diffraction profiles, taking into account the effects of particle size distribution, chemical composition, and convolution factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Eindimensionale Fehlordnung in Kristallen und ihr Einfluss auf die Röntgeninterferenzen. I. Berechnung des Fehlordnungsgrades aus den Röntgenintensitäten
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a general theory of X-ray scattering by crystals showing order in two translation directions but disorder in the third direction, the treatments previously published having proved inadequate for the interpretation of some single-crystal observations of the author.
