Alteration of Bentonite Reacted with Cementitious Materials for 5 and 10 years in the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory (CI Experiment)

TL;DR: In this paper, the cement-clay interaction (CI) experiment was carried out at the Mont Terri rock laboratory to complement the current knowledge on the influence that cementitious materials have on Opalinus Clay (OPA) and bentonite (MX).
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantification Curves for XRD Analysis of Mixed-Layer 14Å/10Å Clay Minerals

TL;DR: Using theoretical profiles of diffracted X-ray intensity for interstratification between layers having d-spacings around 14.3 A and 10.1 A, a series of diagrams was derived from which the proportion of 14.4 A layers (W14) and the probability of passing from a 14. 3 A layer to a 10. 1 A layer (P,4/o) can be derived as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Iron-bentonite interactions in the Kawasaki bentonite deposit, Zao area, Japan

TL;DR: In this article, greenish veins occurring in brecciated bentonite were found in the Kawasaki bentonite deposit of the Zao region in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan and their occurrence possibly indicates the interaction of bentonite with Fe-rich hydrothermal solutions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mineralogical and geochemical criteria for distinguishing turbidite and hemipelagic pelites — the Maastrichtian of the northern Apennines, Italy

TL;DR: In this paper, sedimentological, mineralogical, and geochemical studies were carried out on pelitic fractions of an Apenninic deep-sea turbidite sequence (the Helmintoid Flysch Group) in order to evaluate compositional signals correlated to distinct depositional mechanisms (i.e. sedimentation vs. resedimentation) for deep sea sediments.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of specimen thickness on apparent swelling pressure evolution of compacted bentonite

TL;DR: In this paper , a series of tests to measure p s of compacted bentonite specimens with a dry density ( ρ d ) range of 0.99-1.76 Mg/m 3 and a specimen thickness ( h sp ) range between 2-10 mm were conducted.

Mechanism of burial metamorphism of argillaceous sediment: 1. Mineralogical and chemical evidence

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed mineralogical and chemical investigation of shale cuttings from a well (Case Western Reserve University Gulf Coast 6) in Oligocene-Miocene sediment of the Gulf Coast of the United States was made by x-ray diffraction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Clay Diagenesis in Wilcox Sandstones of Southwest Texas: Implications of Smectite Diagenesis on Sandstone Cementation

TL;DR: In this paper, a diagenetic model is proposed which involves the breakdown of detrital K-feldspar and of some smectite layers in illite/smectite to convert other smectitite layers to illite.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Nature of Interlayering in Mixed-Layer Illite-Montmorillonites

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the interstratification of mixed-layer illite-montmorillonites by comparison of diffraction patterns with calculated one-dimensional diffraction profiles, taking into account the effects of particle size distribution, chemical composition, and convolution factors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Eindimensionale Fehlordnung in Kristallen und ihr Einfluss auf die Röntgeninterferenzen. I. Berechnung des Fehlordnungsgrades aus den Röntgenintensitäten

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a general theory of X-ray scattering by crystals showing order in two translation directions but disorder in the third direction, the treatments previously published having proved inadequate for the interpretation of some single-crystal observations of the author.
