OZET Eylemlilik, kisinin yasaminin yonune iliskin sorumluluk duygusu, yasami icin sorumluluk almasi, kisinin yasami ile ilgili kararlari kontrol edebilme ve bun- larin sorumlulugunu alma konusundaki inanci ve yasamdaki engellerle bas etmede ve sectigi yasam yonunde ilerlemeye iliskin guveni olarak tanimlan- maktadir. Eylemlilik, oz saygi, yasam amaclari, oz-yeterlilik ve ic denetim odagi olmak uzere dort psikolojik yapinin birlesiminden olusan ust bir psiko- lojik yapidir. Literaturde, eylemlilik konusunda oldukca farkli aciklamalar oldugu dikkati cekmektedir. Bu durumun nedeni, kavrama sosyologlar ve psikologlar tarafindan farkli anlamlar yuklenmesi olabilir. Eylemlilik konusuy- la ilgili hem yurtdisindaki hem de Turkiye'deki arastirmalar diger psikososyal calisma konularina gore nispeten azdir. Anahtar Sozcukler: eylemlilik, kisisel eylemlilik, bireylesme, eylemli kisilik ABSTRACT The term agency has been defined as a sense of responsibility for one's life course, the belief that one is in control of one's decisions and is responsible for their outcomes, and the confidence that one will be able to overcome obstacles that impede one's progress along one's chosen life course. Agency is an upper psychological structure which consists of self-esteem, purpose in life, self-efficacy (ego strength), and internal locus of control. Literature offers quite different explanations for agency concept. The reason of this situation may be the attribution of different meanings to the concept by psychologists and sociologists. When considering the agency literature in Turkey and other countries, it can be said that the number of studies on agency subject is lower than the number of studies on other psychosocial study subjects. Progressing towards conservatism : a gramscian challenge to the conceptualisation of class, agency, corruption and reform in 'progressive' analyses of policing

In this paper the text of Durkheim's Suicide is worked upon with concepts developed from a consideration of his discussion of the ‘forced division of labour.’. First Durkheim's category of ‘fatalistic’ suicide is analyzed in light of recent discussions of ‘fatalism’ and shown to be incoherent, produced by the suppression, displacement and condensation of other concepts. These considerations lead to reanalysis of Suicide, of the arguments and themes implicit within it. The text is treated as not so much an exploration of social pathology but a a resource to begin to develop an account of some of the conditions of existence of ‘rational’ individuals and their relationship to one form of arguably rational social order 1 .

A Reworking of Durkheim's Suicide

This paper explores Basil Bernstein’s insights into education and social class, and in particular the relevance of his work for understanding the British middle class. Bernstein is one of the few sociologists of education to recognise and explore differences and tensions within the middle class. We begin by exploring some of the infl uences of Bernstein’s theorisation of social class in general, and outline his main ideas on the relationship between the middle class and education in particular. We then examine the relevance of his work for research on education and middle-class differentiation through drawing on data from our ‘Destined for Success’ project. This project traced the educational biographies of 300 young men and women from the beginning of their promising educational secondary school career to their mid-twenties. We argue that the distinctive dispositions and orientations of the ‘new’ and ‘old’ middle class proposed by Bernstein are evident within parental preferences for types of school, processes of student engagement and, ultimately, differentiated middle-class identities.

Research into mid-career change lends support to K. Roberts' thesis on the significance of the opportunity structure for initial entry to work and during the early working years. Whether objective or ‘socially constructed’, it was perceived as a determinant by men who were ensuring that their children should not be constrained as they had been. The study also offers evidence of the subsequent strengthening and implementation of the self-concept and of a consequent change in the significance of the opportunity structure. The conclusions, highlighted in a case-history, tend to support all parties to the opportunity-structure/occupational-choice debate so far. They suggest that in today's turbulent environment there is an urgent need for careers information, guidance and counselling throughout working life.
