TLDR
Thrombocytopenia was a common haematological finding in patients with Plasmodium infection particularly marked in vivax species infection.Abstract:
Objective: To determine the frequency of thrombocytopenia in Malarial Parasite (MP) positive patients. Study Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Medical Unit-III, Ward-7, JPMC, Karachi, from June to October 2006. Methodology: One hundred twenty four MP positive cases were included in the study. Infections with both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax species were included. Complete blood picture with platelet count was obtained in all patients. Thrombocytopenia was defined as platelets count of < 150,000/cmm. Results: Among 124 patients of MP positive, 100 (80.6%) were found to have thrombocytopenia. Over all 64 patients had Plasmodium falciparum, while 60 patients were having Plasmodium vivax infection. The frequency of thrombocytopenia was 71.87% (n=46) in falciparum and 93.33% (n=56) in vivax infection. Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia was a common haematological finding in patients with Plasmodium infection particularly marked in vivax species nfection.read more

TL;DR: More studies are needed to specifically clarify if thrombocytopenia is the cause or consequence of the clinical disease spectrum, and whether platelet counts usually revert to normal ranges a few days after efficacious antimalarial treatment.

Imported malaria in children: a review of clinical studies
TL;DR: A thorough review of the literature since 1980 was done to identify and critically assess clinical case series on children with imported malaria with respect to travel destination, reason for travel, the use of antimalarial prophylaxis, clinical presentation, delay in diagnosis, laboratory features, complications, management, and outcome.

TL;DR: It was found that the association of thrombocytopenia was statistically more significant with P. vivax monoinfection as compared to P. falciparum.

TL;DR: In endemic areas, the likelihood of malaria is increased by the presence of splenomeGaly and hepatomegaly but individual findings are of limited utility and cannot reliably exclude malaria; combinations of findings may be useful to stratify risk in patients.

Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) in a Pediatric Patient Positive for SARS-CoV-2.
TL;DR: The first documented case of a pediatric patient with ITP who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 is described, which raises awareness of ITP as a possible pediatric presentation of coronavirus disease.

Thrombocytopenia in malaria: Correlation with type and severity of malaria

TL;DR: Although absence of thrombocytopenia is uncommon in malaria, its presence is not a distinguishing feature between the two types, and can have therapeutic implications in context of avoiding unnecessary platelet infusions with the relatively more benign course in P. vivax malaria.

TL;DR: The thrombocytopenia that complicates at least some malarial infections is caused by immune mechanisms; specific IgG binds to platelet-bound malaria antigen through the Fab portion of the immunoglobulin molecule.
