Abstract
An understanding of sediment transport in estuaries is important to enable greater control of processes such as siltation, dredging, and possible pollution. The bottom sediment contained in estuaries is generally a mud and sand mixture, and it is this mixture which is entrained into the water column during periods of higher flow and redeposited during slack flow conditions. This report covers laboratory tests performed on a wider range of mixed mud and sand beds. It extends previous work to include wave erosion tests and erosion tests on undisturbed samples.

Erosion of mud/sand mixtures

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between the erosional properties of combined mud and sand sediments, and found that adding sand to mud, or vice versa, increases the erosion resistance and reduces the erosion rates when the critical shear stress for erosion is exceeded.

The influence of clay on the threshold of movement of fine sandy beds

TL;DR: In this paper, the erosion threshold (i.e. surface shear strength) of mixed sediment deposits has been tested under the action of unidirectional currents (mean critical speeds, 4 mm above the bed, ranging from 12.4 cm s?1 to 18.2 cm s?1) or simulated waves (meancritical periods ranging from 2.0 s to 6.7 s, for near-bed wave amplitudes of 0.28-0.57 m) using an oscillating tray in a rectangular recirculating flume.

Settling and consolidation of mud/sand mixtures

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of sand on the settling and the consolidation of mud has been studied in an extensive set of laboratory experiments and guidelines for modelling the settling of mud/sand mixtures have been formulated.

Modelling sand/mud transport and morphodynamics in the Seine river mouth (France): an attempt using a process-based approach

TL;DR: In this paper, a morphodynamic numerical model was developed within the Seine-Aval program to understand and better describe the major morphological behaviours of the estuary, and a validated fine sediment transport model (3D) was available (Le Hir et al., 2001b).

The Critical Shear Stresses for Sand and Mud Mixture

TL;DR: In this paper, a new formulation based on the critical shear for pure sand and pure mud together with fraction contents was developed, which can be applied to any types of mud and sand mixtures with any sand and mud fractions.
