Abstract
The characteristics of internal gravity waves propagating on a layer of high stratification near the ground with a deeper, weakly stratified layer above are examined with the aid of a nonhydrostatic numerical model. Simulations are performed of a density current propagating into an environment with a typically observed thermodynamic structure and with no shear. These simulations indicate that the amplitude of the disturbance that forms ahead of the density current is limited considerably by the upward propagation of energy in the upper layer. To explain the large amplitude of observed gravity waves there must exist some additional mechanism, besides the weak stratification in the upper layer, to trap energy at low levels. A thorough examination of several observed gravity wave events suggested three commonly occurring mechanisms. The first mechanism, explored in a previous paper, occurs when winds in the upper layer oppose the wave motion. This reduces the Scorer parameter l2 = N2/(U − c)2 − U″/(...

Inferences of Predictability Associated with Warm Season Precipitation Episodes

TL;DR: In this paper, a radar-based climatology of warm season precipitation "episodes" is presented, defined as time-space clusters of heavy precipitation that often result from sequences of organized convection such as squall lines, mesoscale convective systems, and mesoscal convective complexes.

Energy Transport by Nonlinear Internal Waves

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the energy transported by these waves includes a nonlinear advection term huEi that is negligible in linear internal waves and that the pressure-velocity energy flux hupi includes important contributions from nonhydrostatic effects and surface displacement.

A Preliminary Morphology of Precipitation Systems In Tropical Northern Australia

TL;DR: In this article, a preliminary morphology of convective systems observed in the vicinity of Darwin, Australia is presented, and several types of tropical convection during monsoonal and break-season flow are identified using specific examples and compared with a range of systems observed worldwide in the general context of the bulk Richardson number.

A Climatology of Warm-Season Cloud Patterns over East Asia Based on GMS Infrared Brightness Temperature Observations

TL;DR: In this article, hourly infrared brightness temperatures observed by the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) over the region 20°40°N, 95°145°E in May-August 1998-2001 are used to compile a climatology of warm-season cloud/precipitation episodes over east Asia.
