Brazilian coral reefs in a period of global change: A synthesis

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of coral recifes of the costa brasileira in Brazil is presented, showing that a large part of the areas in which ocorrem os maiores recifs de coral correspond to areas of proximidades of centros urbanos that are experimentando crescimento acelerado e rapido desenvolvimento do turismo.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thermal tolerances of reef corals in the Gulf: a review of the potential for increasing coral survival and adaptation to climate change through assisted translocation.

TL;DR: Coral culture and transplantation within the Gulf is feasible for helping maintain coral species populations and preserving genomes and adaptive capacities of Gulf corals that are endangered by future thermal stress events.

Invertebrates and Their Roles in Coral Reef Ecosystems

TL;DR: During the past few decades it has been demonstrated that certain invertebrates can have strong and widespread effects on coral abundances, community structure, and the integrity of reef formations.
Journal ArticleDOI

The invasion of the azooxanthellate coral Tubastraea (Scleractinia: Dendrophylliidae) throughout the world: history, pathways and vectors

TL;DR: The history, pathways and vectors of the biological invasion of the azooxanthellate coral Tubastraea (Scleractinia: Dendrophylliidae) throughout the world are described, clear that these corals are fouling organisms strongly associated with oil and gas platforms worldwide which are thus primary vectors for new introductions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Coral reefs: threats and conservation in an era of global change.

TL;DR: Coral reefs are iconic, threatened ecosystems that have been in existence for approximately 500 million years, yet their continued ecological persistence seems doubtful at present as mentioned in this paper, yet many examples of successful conservation exist from the national level to community-enforced local action.

Spatial distribution and abundance of nonindigenous coral genus Tubastraea (Cnidaria, Scleractinia) around Ilha Grande, Brazil

TL;DR: The coral Tubastraea was found to occupy slopes of every possible angle in the Canal Central of Ilha Grande, but more colonies were found occupying slopes of 80 to 100 degrees, which makes it an organism with great ecological tolerance, with a potential to colonize new areas and increase its current range in Brazil's coastal waters.
