TLDR
In this article, the technical specification trends for the design, installation, and use of 15 to 35 kV underground, insulated power cables by 60 of the largest investor-owned utilities were analyzed.
Abstract
This article analyzes the technical specification trends for the design, installation, and use of 15 to 35 kV underground, insulated power cables by 60 of the largest investor-owned utilities. A distinctive 10-year trend has been established in insulation material preferences, and interesting new data are provided on the cable replacement and rejuvenation practices of these utilities. The results provide practical information that will enable all electrical utilities to compare their medium voltage underground cable specifications and installation practices with those of the largest utilities in their industry.

Partial discharge current pulses in SF6 and the effect of superposition of their radiometric measurement

TL;DR: In this article, measurements of PD current pulses in gas insulated substations are presented for a point-plane configuration using an extremely wide bandwidth (13 GHz) measurement system, and the results show a considerable variation in pulse shape, with the minimum rise time measured being 35 ps.

Molecular thermodynamics of water in direct-buried power cables

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined what actually happens to water within a direct-buried cable throughout the day and year as the cable temperature, the soil temperature, and the water content of the soil vary.

A new sparse design method on phased array-based acoustic emission sensor for partial discharge detection

TL;DR: A quantitative method is proposed for evaluating the acoustic performance of a square PD ultrasonic array sensor and an optimal sparse structure is deduced, which shows that, for certain sparseness, the sensor with the optimal sparseructure exhibits superior positioning accuracy compared to that with a stochastic one.

Design of UHF Antenna Sensor for Partial Discharge Detection in High Voltage S ubstation

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) as the UHF sensor for the partial discharge detection was investigated and the simulation was carried out using CST Design StudioTM to analyze the optimal parameters of the antenna.

EPR-based URD insulation: a question of confidence

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effects of thermal conductivity and thermal expansion on the performance of medium voltage (15-35 kV) underground residential distribution (URD) power cable and concluded that EPR has performance characteristics that permit cables to be used successfully under conditions of electrical stress, heat, and moisture.

A survey of URD cable installed on rural electric systems and failures of that cable

J.C. Dedman, +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the cumulative total of failures, to date, of the cable installed in each year since 1970 was calculated and broken down according to the same variables, such as insulation material and thickness, jacketing, conductor type, and installation methods.

Technical trends in medium voltage URD cable specifications

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the significant technical changes that have taken place during this period and their impact on cable performance and the results of a 1983-1993 ten-year study of the major technical specification changes of the 25 largest investor-owned electric utility companies (IOUs) are presented.
