Abstract
The nature of oscillations in a magnetic cylinder embedded in a magnetic environment is investigated. It is shown that the standard slender flux tube analysis of a kink mode in a cylinder excludes the possibility of a second mode, which arises under photospheric conditions. Under coronal conditions, two widely separated classes of oscillation can be freely sustained, one on an acoustic time-scale and the other on an Alfvenic time-scale. The acoustic-type oscillations are always present, but the much shorter period, Alfvenic-type, oscillations arise only in high density (strictly, low Alfven velocity) loops. An application to waves in fibrils is also given, and suggests (following Wentzel, 1979) that they are fast kink waves propagating in a density enhancement.

Nonlinear instability of kink oscillations due to shear motions

TL;DR: In this paper, a high-resolution 3D nonlinear numerical study of the kink oscillation of an untwisted line-tied magnetic flux tube is presented, showing that the instability produces significant deformations of the tube boundary.

Vertical oscillations of a coronal loop observed by TRACE

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on a loop oscillation event observed by TRACE in the 195 A bandpass at the solar limb and find that only the vertical oscillations produce a signature in the difference images in agreement with the observations.

Decayless low-amplitude kink oscillations : a common phenomenon in the solar corona?

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the decayless regime of coronal kink oscillations recently discovered in the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/AIA data and estimated the prevalence of this phenomenon and its characteristic signatures.

Quasi-periodic Pulsations in Solar and Stellar Flares: An Overview of Recent Results (Invited Review)

TL;DR: Quasi-periodic pulsations (or QPPs) are periodic intensity variations in the flare emission that occur across all wavelength bands as discussed by the authors, and they are an inherent feature of solar flares.

Effect of longitudinal magnetic and density inhomogeneity on transversal coronal loop oscillations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the combined effect of magnetic and density stratification on transversal coronal loop oscillations, and found that even a relatively small loop expansion can have a significant and pronounced effect on the accuracy of the plasma density scale height measurements derived from observation of coronal oscillations.

Wave propagation in a magnetically structured atmosphere: III: The slab in a magnetic environment

TL;DR: In this paper, the propagation of waves in a magnetic slab embedded in magnetic environment is investigated and possible modes of propagation are examined from the general dispersion relation, both analytically and numerically, for disturbances which are evanescent in the environment.
