Extending the study of precarious and contingent labor into the agricultural sector, we suggest that high rates of overtime work may be a unique form of labor precarity in agriculture, not just part-time work.
The organization of work in field agriculture may pose risks for poor occupational health outcomes among a vulnerable worker population.
The results indicate that trends and patterns of youth involvement in agriculture vary across gender and work locations, and so do their marginal products.
Based on this study, we recommend using the Work Ability Index questionnaire for assessing the health of those working in agriculture.
This will also encourage youth in agriculture for economic growth.
That will be a sign that a policy for sustainable agriculture has come of age.
Presently, U. S. agriculture is in transition.
