This paper suggests using the UPS output filter inductor current instead of the output current when calculating the UPS output active and reactive powers.
The consequences of inrush current can be the reduction of output voltage and tripping of protective devices of the UPS system.
Further, unlike the conventional online UPS, the proposed hybrid ESS-UPS is capable of supplying emergency power to two types of critical loads, voltage-frequency independent (VFI) load and voltage-frequency dependent (VFD) load.

A UPS not only provides uninterruptible power to critical loads, but also isolation from the utility line, power factor correction and the regulation of associated line voltage variations as well as several forms of voltage transients present on the utility line.
Therefore, the proposed scheme is especially appropriate for a fully digital controlled UPS or a high power UPS with limited voltage control bandwidth.

This power was shown to have advantages over both static UPS and standard rotary UPS systems, including reduced output impedance, reduced distortion with nonlinear loads, higher reliability, and better isolation.
Moreover, the proposed UPS exhibits sinusoidal input/output characteristics, high power density and a simple control circuit.

The values of real power and reactive power in the output of UPS can be regulated in the proposed method to imitate various loads.
The real power capability is improved compared with that of a conventional online UPS system, and extra loads can be connected to the UPS system during outage.
The proposed UPS system has high operation efficiency and high usage of the converter capacity, and good endurance against voltage transients or EMI noise resulted from the mains.
