TL;DR: Fluorine-containing poly-styrene-acrylate (PSA) latex with core-shell structure was successfully synthesized by seeded semicontinuous emulsion polymerization using fluorine monomer Actyflon-G04 and reactive emulsifier DNS-86.
Abstract: Fluorine-containing poly-styrene-acrylate (PSA) latex with core–shell structure was successfully synthesized by seeded semicontinuous emulsion polymerization using fluorine monomer Actyflon-G04 and reactive emulsifier DNS-86. The chemical composition, morphology of latex, and surface composition of the latex film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The stability properties of latex were tested by Ca2+, centrifugal and mechanical stability tests, and the latex film was studied by water contact angle, water absorption ratio, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The results show that fluorine-containing PSA latex particles with crosslinked core and crosslinked shell structure have excellent stability properties, and the film of latex has excellent water repellency, thermal stability, and chemical resistance properties when the amount of fluorine monomer was only 8.0 wt%.

TL;DR: A series of ultraviolet-curable, boron-containing hybrid coatings were prepared by an anhy-drous sol-gel technique from a mixture of an acrylated bisphenol A based epoxy resin, methacryloxymethyl trie- thoxysilane, and boric acid as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A series of ultraviolet (UV)-curable, boron- containing hybrid coatings were prepared by an anhy- drous sol-gel technique from a mixture of an acrylated bisphenol A based epoxy resin, methacryloxymethyl trie- thoxysilane, and boric acid. The use of boric acid allowed the hydrolysis and condensation of hybrid silicon alkox- ides without the further addition of water or a catalyst. The chemical structure of the boron-containing hybrid coatings was characterized with Fourier transform infra- red, real-time infrared, and 29 Si cross-polarization/magic- angle spinning NMR techniques. UV-curable coatings were applied to polycarbonate and Plexiglas substrates. The physical and mechanical properties of the UV-cured coatings (e.g., pendulum hardness, pencil hardness, con- tact angle, gel content, methyl ethyl ketone rubbing test, tensile test, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, neutron absorption, and limiting oxygen index) were examined. The hybrid coatings showed a significant enhancement in their radiation-shielding properties. The thermal behavior of the coatings was also evaluated. It was observed that the thermal stability of the coatings mainly depended on their boron and silicate contents. The results of all analyses of the free films and coatings were examined. TL;DR: In this article, the use of plastic bottle waste as cement-substitution within composite materials for preventing chemical attacks or repairing various reinforced concrete structures is described, which can reduce the penetration of aggressive agents.
Abstract: This paper describes an innovative use of plastic bottle waste as cement-substitution within composite materials for preventing chemical attacks or repairing various reinforced concrete structures. Various weight fractions of cement varying from 2.5% to 7.5% were substituted by the same weight of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The specimens were tested in flexure and compressive strength and for chemical resistance to acid, basic solutions at 5% and for chloride ion permeability. From this study, it was found that the PET-modified mortars exposed to aggressive environments showed better resistance to chemical attack and higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than unmodified one without substantially affecting the mechanical strength in tap water. The addition of PET to the modified mortars, means reducing the penetration of aggressive agents. So, the mass loss of composites exposed to hydrochloric and acetic acid solutions is lower than those of unmodified mortar. The basic solutions are harmless for composite materials. The formations which appear such as different calcium salts were determined by X-ray diffraction and FT-IR.

Abstract: In this paper, the thermal and chemical changes in Hibiscus sabdariffa stem fiber on graft copolymerization with methyl acrylate (MA) and acrylonitrile (AN) monomer, using a ceric ammonium nitrate – nitric acid initiator system, has been reported. Different reaction parameters such as temperature, time, initiator concentration, monomer concentration, and pH were optimized to get the maximum graft yield. The graft copolymer thus formed was characterized by FTIR, SEM, TGA, DTA, and XRD techniques. The swelling behavior of graft copolymers in methanol, n-butanol, water and di methyl formamide was studied and screened for dye uptake behavior in 0.1% gentian violet dye for seven hours. With increase in percentage grafting the percentage crystallinity, crystallinity index, and moisture absorbance were found to decrease whereas chemical resistance (against 1 N HCl and 1 N NaOH) and thermal resistance were found to increase for its various advanced applications.

TL;DR: In this article, the additive effect of comonomers on percentage grafting, properties and the behavior of fiber was explored for graft co-polymers with XRD, TGA, DTA, SEM and FTIR.
Abstract: Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle) is a cellulose rich (73.9%) waste bio-mass found in abundance through-out the world. It has light weight and high tensile strength that promotes its use as backbone for graft copolymerization. Various reaction parameters for the graft copolymerization were optimized to use it with effective monomer individually and then in binary vinyl monomeric mixtures, to explore the additive effect of comonomers on percentage grafting, properties and the behavior of fiber. The graft co-polymers were characterized by XRD, TGA, DTA, SEM and FTIR techniques and evaluated for physico-chemical changes like moisture absorption, swelling behavior, dye uptake studies and chemical resistance. With increase in percentage grafting, the percentage crystallinity, crystallinity index, hydrophilicity were reduced whereas an increase in physico-chemico-thermal resistance, hydrophobicity, miscibility with organic solvents improved.
