TL;DR: This study analyzed the current process of curtain wall installation and investigated the potential of an automated system combining a commercial excavator and a 3-DOF manipulator, which has the adaptations necessary to work with any type of commercialized excavator.
Abstract: The development of automation in construction has been restricted by the variety of construction materials used, variable circumstances, and difficulties in the quantitative management of the construction process. Curtain wall, however, can be considered a relatively standard material compared to other construction materials. In this study, we analyze the current process of curtain wall installation and investigate the potential of an automated system combining a commercial excavator and a 3-DOF manipulator. This automated system has the adaptations necessary to work with any type of commercialized excavator. Therefore, workers need to transfer only the 3-DOF manipulator portion of the system when they move to other construction sites. This paper investigates experimental trials involving the proposed system at construction sites to determine its performance, working time, and efficiency. Results from this study were analyzed and further research options outlined.

TL;DR: In this article, the serviceability of an economical, nearly conventional, glass curtain wall system that provides a low level of blast resistance in appropriate applications was investigated through static and dynamic experimental testing.
Abstract: Recent terrorist events have underscored the importance of designing glass curtain walls as engineered systems. For most building owners, however, it is usually an unjustifiable expense to have a curtain wall designed to provide a high level of blast resistance. This paper investigates the serviceability of an economical, nearly conventional, glass curtain wall system that provides a low level of blast resistance in appropriate applications. A conventional, split screw spline mullion system is utilized with laminated glass lites properly attached to the mullions with structural silicone sealant. The response of this system to service load conditions is first explored through static and dynamic experimental testing. A simple finite-element model of the system is then calibrated to low-amplitude static test results. Finally, the calibrated model is used to perform modal and transient analyses that are compared to experimental free vibration responses. The model was found to provide results that agree well with experimental responses, indicating that the primary properties have been adequately defined for reliable serviceability investigations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the ANSYS finite element analysis program to develop a model and obtain the stress distribution within an architectural glass panel after presumed seismic movements cause glass-to-frame contact.
Abstract: A pilot study has been conducted to guide the development of a finite element modeling formulation for the analysis of architectural glass curtain walls under in-plane lateral load simulating earthquake effects. This pilot study is one aspect of ongoing efforts to develop a general prediction model for glass cracking and glass fallout for architectural glass storefront and curtain wall systems during seismic loading. For this study, the ANSYS finite element analysis program was used to develop a model and obtain the stress distribution within an architectural glass panel after presumed seismic movements cause glass-to-frame contact. The analysis was limited to static loading of a dry-glazed glass curtain wall panel. A mock-up of the glass curtain wall considered in the analysis with strain gages mounted at select locations on the glass and the aluminum framing was subjected to static loading. A comparison is made between the finite element analysis predicted strain and the experimentally measured strain at each strain gage location.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of relative stiffness on load and stress distributions of dimension stone cladding panels, panel anchors, and metal backup structures are investigated for new and existing cladding failures.
Abstract: Modern building facade design concepts consider all cladding materials, including dimension stone cladding, as nonstructural elements designed to transmit localized gravity and lateral loads to the primary building structural elements. In practice, the structural backup behind dimension stone cladding can take a wide variety of forms, including cast-in-place concrete shear walls, brick and concrete masonry units, aluminum curtain wall system framing, hot and cold rolled steel subframes, and precast concrete panels and members. The flexural stiffness of these backup systems can vary widely, with cast-in-place concrete shear walls on one end of the stiffness spectrum and aluminum curtain framing on the other. The stiffness of dimension stone cladding relative to the backup system can have a significant effect both on the stresses induced in the cladding and the loads transmitted through the cladding anchors. Likewise, the stiffness of the anchor elements and the backup system can affect the loading and stress distribution within the cladding panels. This paper addresses some of the issues associated with the interaction of dimension stone cladding panels, panel anchors, and metal backup structures, and the effects of relative stiffness on load and stress distributions. Information is presented that was obtained from laboratory tests and analyses for new designs, as well as investigations of dimension stone cladding failures.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the evolution of the use of stone in curtain wall systems and the associated ASTM standards for building stone, and discuss the implications of performing full-size panel testing in addition to ASTM C 880 standard specimen testing on design of thin stone cladding systems for tall building construction.
Abstract: Beginning with the Industrial Revolution and rapidly increasing following World War II, building cladding systems changed dramatically. Exterior wall construction that had previously consisted of thick mass masonry evolved into contemporary curtain wall systems. As curtain wall systems evolved, the economics of reducing the thickness of curtain wall components became more important. The use of thin stone veneers on buildings in the modern era was not associated with increased knowledge of stone material properties based on testing and research. Rather, the reduction in thickness is attributable to advancements in fabrication technology, economy in construction, and a rational approach to design of veneer systems. This paper will discuss the evolution of the use of stone in curtain wall systems and the associated ASTM standards for building stone. Early ASTM standards for building stone were limited to tests used to evaluate the compression strength of stone which was consistent for mass bearing walls of the early 20th century. As stone was increasingly used more as a veneer, standards for modulus of rupture (ASTM C 99) were introduced. As systems continued to evolve, flexural strength (ASTM C 880) was introduced to address material variability. The evolution of ASTM C 880 included increasing specimen width to further incorporate variability of the stone. Recently, the authors have introduced full panel testing in the design and evaluation process. This paper will present data and discuss the differences in test results for three case studies where both ASTM C 880 specimens and full panel flexural strength testing was performed. The focus of this section will be to discuss the implications of performing full-size panel testing in addition to ASTM C 880 standard specimen testing on design of stone cladding systems for tall building construction as a natural evolution of the design and evaluation process for thin stone cladding systems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the design and analysis of unitized curtain wall for high-rise building, using finite element and structural analysis program, is discussed. But, the authors have found that some people simply think that curtain wall system is just an assembly of glass, aluminium, steel, screw and sealant.
Abstract: []: Facades are the first aesthetical feature of a building that distinguish one building from another. Its distinctive appearance is often the subject of controversial debate. Nowadays, Unitized Curtain Wall system is commonly used for new high-rise buildings, it becomes a major investment in both construction and long-term success of the building. Compared to reinforced concrete structure, unitized curtain wall is new technology in the construction industry. This dissertation will focus on the design and analysis of unitized curtain wall for high-rise building, using finite element and structural analysis programme. The curtain wall systems nowadays, even the simpler types, are far more sophisticate products than their early counterparts, though many of the earliest walls are still performing admirably. More than fifty years of experience and development have eliminated the major difficulties of the pioneering designs, resulting in better products. Beginning with the relatively simple, but innovative concept of the early 1950’s, a series of window units and panels jointed and supported by simple framing members. Curtain wall system technology has developed, over the years, into a proliferation of highly engineered design. The author worked in construction industry for 5 years and working in Facade Consultancy for almost 2 years. I am currently engaging in various key Facade projects in Asia. I have found that some people simply think that curtain wall system is just an assembly of glass, aluminium, steel, screw and sealant. Curtian wall system, apart from its appearance, functions as an external enclosure to protect the building from weather and to achieve pressure-equalization between the outdoor and indoor environment. Its construction is not only an assembly of several components, but an advanced technology with involves sophisticated calculation. In this paper, design concerns of the unitized curtain wall system are also regarded as major issue to discuss.

Abstract: A structure of stone panels for constructing the exterior of a building and a constructing method of the outer wall by using the stone panels are provided to take advantage of both closed and open joints method by applying caulk between the seams of stone panels from a rear section of the stone panel, and by applying the caulk to have a depth less than the length of the gap between adjacent stone panels, and to construct the outer wall easily and reduce the overall construction time by producing a single unit of construction by coupling the stone panel unit and a truss frame unit, and coupling the single unit of construction to anchor bars installed on a slab of a building, allowing the stone panels to form a curtain wall around the slab. A pair of bracket frame(110) is disposed on two sides on the back of each unit of a stone panel(100). Plural anchor bolts(103) couple the bracket frames to stone panels(101). Plural anchor brackets(120) are installed to each pairs of the bracket frames. The seams between each of the unit stone panels are sealed with caulks. The back surfaces of the caulk and the unit stone panels are disposed abreast each other on the same plane, forming a stone panel unit. A truss frame unit(200) has combing members(230) coupling to anchor bars(11) installed on a slab(10) of a building. The truss frame unit has anchor holes aligned to the anchor brackets of the stone panel unit. On one side, insulation members(220) are stacked. Coupling members(310) penetrate through the anchor holes and the anchor brackets to couple the stone panel unit and the truss frame unit, consequently forming a single unit of construction. Plural units of construction are installed to allow coupling members of the truss frame unit to combine to anchor bars installed on the slab of the building, allowing plural stone panels to form the curtain wall like outer wall on the slab of the building. The caulk is filled to have a depth less than the length of a gap between two unit stone panels. One side of the caulk is in contact with the caulk sheet. The insulation members include a pair of CRC(Compressed Cellulose Reinforced Cement,221) board, and a compressed insulation water proof foam(222) interposed between the CRC boards.
