TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a centrifugal pump with an impeller mounted on a shaft in a chamber formed by two releasably-connected casing components, sealing faces on a gland part in one casing component and gland parts on the shaft engage with relative rotation and are flushed at their outer peripheral edges by the liquid being pumped to prevent the formation of crystals at the faces.
Abstract: 1,062,946. Mechanical seals; washers. SPEEDWELL RESEARCH Ltd. Nov. 3, 1964 [Nov. 14, 1963; Feb. 19, 1964], Nos. 44947/63 and 6878/64. Headings F2B and F2H. [Also in Division F1] In a centrifugal pump having an impeller mounted on a shaft in a chamber formed by two releasably-connected casing components, seal faces on a gland part in one casing component and a gland part on the shaft engage with relative rotation and are flushed at their outer peripheral edges by the liquid being pumped to prevent the formation of crystals at the faces. A collar 38 of ceramic, stainless steel or titanium, is supported in a rubber sealing ring 37 mounted in a rebate 36 in a casing component 10. A face 41 on the collar sealingly engages a face 42 on a graphite ring 43 engaging a rubber sealing ring 44 and embracing a sleeve 29 pinned at 32 to the shaft 31 of an electric motor 26a. Any liquid leaking past the faces 41, 42 is flung by a disc 33 out of peripheral spaces between the casing component 10 and the electric motor. A casing component 11 is detachably secured to the component 10 with a seal 21 therebetween, by three equi-angularly spaced thumb screws 22. Removal of the component 11 and a screw 50 permits removal of the impeller and rings 43, 44 for cleaning. The screw 50 abuts a rubber sealing washer 51 provided with a metal locking insert. The screw 50 and sleeve 29 may be of stainless steel or titanium.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the turbulence characteristics of the high speed stream issuing from a turbine type impeller in a fully baffled tank using a constant-temperature hotwire anemometer with air as the fluid within the tank.
Abstract: tirred tanks are widely used in the chemical indusS try for effecting mixing, but their design has so far been empirical. A theoretical treatment of the flow within a stirred tank is rendered intractable by the inherent randomness and three-dimensionality of the flow and non-linearity of the governing equations of motion. Experimental studies of the large- and small-scale turbulence characteristics in stirred vessels may be expected to lead to formulation of realistic models of the flow. These models can then be used to predict such quantities of engineering interest as the mixing efficiency, pumping capacity, power requirements, etc. It was the objective of this work to measure the turbulence characteristics of the high speed stream issuing from a turbine type impeller in a fully baffled tank. Turbulence parameters were measured using a constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer with air as the fluid within the tank. The hot-wire technique was chosen because of the ease of operation and extremely good frequency response. Use of mr as working fluid Cooper‘” recently showed that the temporal mean velocity distribution in the impeller stream is the same with air and water as the fluid in the tank. We have assumed that the small-scale turbulence characteristics would also be similar at equal Reynolds numbers irrespective of the fluid in the tank. There exists sufficient confirmation in the literature for air and water flows in circular pipes and circular jets, and also grid-generated turbulent flows in wind and water tunnels. Chuang and Cermak“’ have compared their measurements of turbulent intensities, shear stress and energy spectra in the pipe flow of distilled water for a Reynolds number of 5 x lo4 with those of Sandborn‘J) and Laufer“) who studied the flow of air in a pipe at the same Reynolds number. The agreement between the air and water data is remarkable

Abstract: Electric motor driven pump units, especially suited for pumping liquefied gases, including cryogenic fluids, which are lubricated, cooled and balanced with small amounts of fluid pumped by the unit (pumpage), such as 1 to 3 percent of the designed flow capacity of the pump. These small amounts of pumpage are divided into a major flow path through the most heated portions of the units discharging on the pressure side of the pump and a minor flow path through a thrust bearing for the unit and then through the lesser heated portions to discharge on the intake side of the pump. The major flow path, receiving about 75 percent of the lubricating pumpage, is downwardly through the motor shaft radial bearings and rotor compartment to an impeller and a pumping or collection chamber. The minor flow path, receiving about 25 percent of the lubricating pumpage, is through variable thrust bearing orifices tending to raise the motor shaft and carry the axial load of the unit on a thin film discharging through the hollow interior of the shaft to the pump inlet. The pumpage in the major flow path is maintained under pressure and will not boil even when appreciably heated. The minor flow path picks up very little heat and is primarily for balancing the axial thrust load on the shaft.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-stage pump with spaced tapered roller bearing assemblies is presented. But the work is limited to a single-stage case with a single inducer and at least one impeller.
Abstract: A multi-stage pump including a casing having an inducer section and at least one impeller section. A shaft rotatably driven by a suitable prime mover extends into the casing and the inducer and the impeller or impellers as the case may be in the casing are mounted on and are rotatable with the shaft. Novel spaced tapered roller bearing assemblies support the shaft, each bearing assembly being separately lubricated by a lubricant, e.g. grease, which is pumped by the action of the roller bearings through connected chambers and passages about the respective roller bearing assemblies. The spaced roller bearing assemblies are stressed for rigidity in assembled position by a telescoping piston means which defines a fluid chamber into which any suitable fluid can be introduced to force the piston means to engage and exert stress on the outer races of the respective tapered roller bearing assemblies for maintaining the tapered rollers thereof in contact with the races at all times during operation. Alternatively, slingers can be mounted for rotation with the shaft adjacent each of the tapered roller bearing assemblies for assisting the pumping action of the tapered roller bearings and for dissipating bearing heat. Axial thrust along the shaft is balanced by a fluid line connecting a leakage cavity behind the back shroud of the last mounted impeller to the inlet or suction side of the impeller. A pressure regulating valve may be provided in the fluid line for varying the pressure of the fluid in the leakage cavity as a function of variations in the pressure of the fluid flowing into the inlet or suction side of the pump. The pump provides for a reduction in cavitation at low load conditions by withdrawing or passing back flowing fluid from the periphery of the inducer through a leakage passage in communication with the pump suction. Additionally, cavitation over the entire operating range of the pump is reduced by communicating the leakage joints of the impeller casing wearing rings with the pump suction. Also disclosed is novel casing structure for withdrawing gases from suction fluid, withdrawn back flow fluid and fluid leakage from the wearing rings.
