TL;DR: A FORTRAN program for calculating the off-design performance of centrifugal compressors with channel diffusers is presented and an example case of performance comparison with a compressor built by a commercial engine manufacturer is presented to demonstrate the correlation with limited experimental data.
Abstract: A FORTRAN program for calculating the off-design performance of centrifugal compressors with channel diffusers is presented. Use of the program requires complete knowledge of the overall impeller and diffuser geometries. Individual losses are computed using analytical equations and empirical correlations which relate loss levels to velocity diagram characteristics and overall geometry. On a given speed line compressor performance is calculated for a range of inlet velocity levels. At flow rates between surge and choke, individual efficiency decrements, compressor overall efficiency, and compressor total pressure ratio are tabulated. An example case of performance comparison with a compressor built by a commercial engine manufacturer is presented to demonstrate the correlation with limited experimental data.

TL;DR: In this article, a synchronous motor is constructed as a toroidal toroidal motor with inner pole faces in the form of sections or strips of a cylinder, defining a cylindrical space within which a permanent magnet rotor can rotate.
Abstract: To permit submerged operation, the motor is formed as a synchronous motor, in which a coil is totally encapsulated in plastic material, the coil being toroidal and having end ferromagnetic disks above and below the coil, the disks being alternately supplied with inner pole faces, in the form of sections or strips of a cylinder, defining a cylindrical space within which a permanent magnet rotor can rotate. The cylindrical strips are formed with cut-outs, so that the magnetic field will be unsymmetrical, thus establishing a rotating field. The pole faces are separated from the rotor by plastic material, the rotor being integrally connected to the hub of an impeller for the pump.

TL;DR: In this paper, the axial flow combine of the type embodying threshing and separating means in the form of a generally cylindrical casing within which a vaned rotor operates and which defines a thresher region and a separating region.
Abstract: An axial flow combine of the type embodying threshing and separating means in the form of a generally cylindrical casing within which a vaned rotor operates and which defines a threshing region and a separating region. Helical impeller vanes on the forward end of the rotor impel the crop material rearwardly into the threshing region for conduction therethrough and from thence into and through the separating region. To enhance the capacity of the casing and rotor to handle crop material, a pair of transverse sheets which extend at a slight angle to each other so that one sheet is slanted in one direction relative to the rotor axis and the other sheet is slanted in the opposite direction, cooperate to establish, in effect a front wall for the casing. These sheets cooperate with the rotating impeller vanes to receive the backlash material which issues from the impeller and direct it forwardly into the working region of the latter.

TL;DR: A reversible dual-function pump for a laundry appliance is described in this paper, which recirculates detergent water in a tub at a moderate rate when driven in a first rotary direction and removes such water from the tube at a greater rate if driven in the opposite direction.
Abstract: A reversible dual function pump for a laundry appliance which recirculates detergent water in a tub at a moderate rate when driven in a first rotary direction and which removes such water from the tube at a greater rate when driven in the opposite direction. An impeller and a volute cavity of the pump are arranged to produce a positive displacement pumping action which provides sufficient reserve pumping capacity to allow exceptional dimensional latitude in the pump construction and an internal by pass circuit for regulating internal pressure in the pump. Wide dimensional latitude in the pump components allows them to be formed of plastic materials and allows the pump to be mounted on and driven directly by a motor. Pressure regulation by the internal by pass avoids the risk of pump out in an improper operational mode and the possibility of producing suds from an excessive vacuum condition.

TL;DR: In this article, a portion of the plastic is confined between a rigid central shaft spline and a cup rotatable with the shaft so that the plastic cannot flow without two-dimensional or three-dimensional distortion or tearing, both of which are resisted by the plastic.
Abstract: Gear pump impellers formed of Teflon because of the softness and slipperiness of the material are difficult to connect to a metallic shaft. Yet Teflon is a very good material for gear pump impellers because of its low co-efficient of friction, chemical inertness and ability to withstand high temperatures and extreme temperature variations. In this invention a portion of the plastic is confined between a rigid central shaft spline and a cup rotatable with the shaft so that the plastic cannot flow without two-dimensional or three-dimensional distortion or tearing, both of which are resisted by the plastic.

TL;DR: In this article, an automotive waterpump subassembly comprises a sheet metal housing rotatably supporting an impeller drive shaft by a pair of ball bearing complements located in a sealed chamber in the housing.
Abstract: An automotive waterpump subassembly comprises a sheet metal housing rotatably supporting an impeller drive shaft by a pair of ball bearing complements located in a sealed chamber in the housing. The outer raceway for one of the ball complements is supported on a sheet metal wall plate which is located in the middle of the housing and which is resiliently deflected to axially preload the bearing complements. A sheet metal end plate carries a ceramic face seal element which engages a carbon face seal element carried by the impeller shaft. The wall plate and end plate form a chamber which is divided into three compartments by a S-shaped baffle mounted on the impeller drive shaft. The drive shaft is hollow and closed at the impeller end by a sheet metal impeller. A radial passage in the hollow shaft is aligned with the interface of the face seal element and provides a drainage path directly from the outer compartment to atmosphere through the hollow drive shaft for water leaking past the face seal. A drainage hole in the housing communicates directly with the intermediate compartment providing a second drainage path for water before it can reach the inner compartment. The bearings are further sealed from the inner compartment.

Abstract: This paper shows how analytic surfaces can be used to define the vanes of an impeller of a centrifugal compressor. The analysis has been given of a cubic-linear patch for representing three-dimensional geometries. An example has shown how this type of patch can be successfully used to model the geometry of centrifugal or mixed flow impellers having 'swept back vanes at the outlet. The analysis has been programmed for the Atlas computer at the Computer Aided Design Centre (CADC), Cambridge and set up in such a way that the designer can examine systematically a range of impeller shapes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors experimentally examined the generation and decay of rotating noise and turbulent noise generated by axial flow fans by changing various factors, such as the suction pipe geometry, the location and the thickness of struts, and the combination of the number of impeller blades and struts.
Abstract: Noise generated by a fan consists of the rotating noise and the turbulent noise. These two kinds of noise have entirely different characters with respect to decay in an axisymmetric pipe. In this paper the generation and decay of these two kinds of noise are experimentally examined by changing various factors, such as the suction pipe geometry, the location and the thickness of struts, and the combination of the number of impeller blades and the number of struts. The rate of decay of the rotating noise is predictable and in most cases the noise quickly decreases in proportion to the distance from the rotor, providing that the number of impeller blades and the number of struts are properly chosen. Therefore, the noise observeda way from a low pressure axial flow fan is mostly the turbulent noise.

TL;DR: A self-priming centrifugal pump with a rotatable impeller positioned in a volute for transferring fluid from the suction chamber to the separation chamber is described in this paper.
Abstract: A self-priming centrifugal pump having suction and separation chambers defined within a casing, and a rotatable impeller positioned in a volute for transferring fluid from the suction chamber to the separation chamber. Reprime lift capability and priming rate are substantially improved by an elbow-shaped priming passage communicating the lower region of the separation chamber with the lower region of the volute, and by an upstanding ramp-like shoulder formed in the volute below the impeller. The improved priming passage configuration and the ramp-like shoulder are believed to effect a more efficient delivery of fluid from the separation chamber to the impeller during pump priming, and to effect a more turbulent mixing in the impeller of fluid with air from the suction chamber whereby air is efficiently entrained in the exhausted fluid and the pump is rapidly reprimed.
